atlas01 Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 So our HTiB Yamaha system has kicked it (due to a power surge I think), and we're looking to replace it. My understanding is that the speakers from the Yamaha system *probably* cannot be re-used? Or at least the sub-woofer cannot be used, due to it's using a VGA style plug to connect to the main Yamaha unit. The speakers hang off the sub. If I understand correctly, the sub probably has an integrated amp? So we're therefore looking to either replace with another HTiB or a separate AVR/speaker setup. I'm leaning towards the latter, and like the look of some of those Eastwood special packages - but we live in Melb. Can anyone recommend a place with similar deals? The setup will be used in the living room in conjunction with the Samsung 55" LCD for a variety of TV/Blu-ray/PS3/Music, and therefore requires HDMI in/out. It needs to be decent but reasonably priced (around $1500 would be good) as we also have a dedicated HT room with projector for serious movie viewing. TIA!
atlas01 Posted May 24, 2010 Author Posted May 24, 2010 So I've found a Denon 3808SR for about $1700. Importantly for me it can decode all the HD audio formats, and seems grunty enough for a living room system. What do people think? Is it still worth buying given it was released almost 3 years ago? What would be the alternative? Also, what would be some good budget speakers to pair it with?
