www.audiogon.com they are selling for low to mid $3K US if you dont mind shipping. I think some are Arcam dealers so world wide warranty might be in place.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into the warranty conditions and might even consider this option. It would sure work out a lot cheaper than the $7499 RRP with a minor discount!

Awesome machine, will be interested if to hear how you go if you purchase one!

Locally, 20% off full RRP is easily attainable on this unit.

Really!? I could barely get 10% off the RRP from my local hi-fi store. Can you recommend me a few stores to try (location does not matter)?

Sure, mate. Late last year, I enquired about this unit and Simply Hi Fi in Subiaco, Western Australia, said they could sell one for about $6,000.00 (RRP of $7,500.00). Speak to Pierre over there. Telephone number is 08 9388 2709.

Fantastic! Thank you very much for that, I'll give them a call later this arvo.

have you considered the AVR500? Has all the important bits the AVR600 has but is $1500 cheaper.

I really like the idea of playing .flac files over the network on the AVR600 so I never enquired further about the AVR500. $1500 cheaper is a huge difference! I haven't had the chance to compare it either, do you think an extra 20wpc make a big difference? I assume the DAC's in both are the same?

could be wrong but i thought the power was the same for both? in fact according to the info i have read, its exactly the same as the 600, except for those few extra features which are removed.

i havent compared them, but would be surprised if they didnt sound exactly the same.

one word of caution - if you havent already, have a read through some of the threads on these AVR's on avforums. last i checked they were still battling with firmware bugs. they are probably better now, but when i was considering getting one, things were pretty bad. in the end it was enough to turn me off one and i ended up getting a good deal on a run-out denon instead. have since never looked back.

The AVR500 has more 'conventional' Class A/B amplification whereas the AVR600 has more efficient Class G amplification (along with a little more power per channel).

You might want to check out the owners thread on AVS for this receiver. It seems to be quite seriously bug ridden.

I just had a read of that thread.... Wow! Is it normal for high end devices to have that many bugs!? I've been thinking about the AVR600 as well based on the glowing reviews and forum feedback, that is just a total put off!

No not normal. I think the problem is the smaller manufactures just haven't figured out things like HDMI implementation, along with the fact that in general these things are getting more and more complex. Brands like Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer etc have been doing this since day dot and have massive R&D budgets. Traditional HiFi companies are mostly used to making minimalistic stereo amplifiers and the like which are a lot less complex.

I'd be pretty angry if I paid that much and just had to deal with bugs for most of it's life.

As a result of the issues high end companies on smaller R&D budgets are having with HDMI some have even pulled the pin on HDMI all together. Its a shame someone cannot develop universal HDMI hardware and software that can be used by the companies with smaller budgets to overcome them having to do all of the R&D by themselves. Not unlike the way high end companies have used Oppo's platform for BD players.

The fact that we have Arcam who are well known for some of the greatest surround sound receivers and seperates having HDMI as thier downfall is ridiculous!

I've had the AVR600 for about 12 months now. The only issue that is outstanding for me is the colour sync over HDMI when I don't turn on my Oppo 83 first. (an easy work-around)

The amp is quite amazing performance-wise. I have used the 6th and 7th channels to bi-amp my B&W 802Ds (left and right fronts). I'm very happy using for BD, SACD, DVD-A and FLAC. My ear-drums would explode before I get any amp distortion.

I also understand the last issue (for me) is already fixed in a beta release.

Firmware updates are rather common these days (how many on the Oppo 83 since its release?).

Great to hear your positive experience with the AVR600, HomerJ.

Lovely loudspeakers the 802D's.

Just out of curiosity, what SACD/CD Player do you use, and what Universal Disc/Blu-ray Disc Player do you use?

I'm using the Oppo 83 for all. I do have and old Pioneer 733? that I was using for SACD before the Oppo but not directly compared the two (I have recently loaned the Pio to a mate to get him into hires music).

I am planning to upgrade to an Oppo 83SE but will wait a bit to see if Oppo bring out a 3D player with upgraded DACs.

Any thoughts on another (better) SACD player most welcome.

It depends on your budget, mate. Seeing that you have got such a good A/V Receiver, I would suggest a dedicated SACD/CD Player. I am extremely happy with my Marantz SA-KI Pearl SACD/CD Player, which retails for $4,999.00. Otherwise, something like a Marantz SA8003 would be a good unit to try out. I can't remember how much RRP is but I think it is about $1,500.00 or so.

Good suggestion, mate, the CD37. I think that RRP here in Australia is likely to be over $3,000.00, but it certainly is a nice CD Player.
