Muzzer Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 Does anyone know of a PVR that supports recording subtitles or captioning? Anybody tried it on there PVR? I'm tasked with buying one for my Dad who's virtually deaf and a PVR is useless to him unless it supports this. I'd appreciate any help.

You're probably better off asking about other factors like cost, ease of use etc. and finding a match. Then just double check it can do subtitles. FWIW The BeyonWiz range will (The current "Lite" model is about $460). The Tivo is another good option (very user friendly) www.tivo.com.au. Need a broadband connection in the house though. Pretty sure the Topfield range also does it. Regards Peter Gillespie
AFCfan Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 As a Panasonic DMR XW-350 owner I might as well add the Panasonic recorders to the list that can record subtitles. The issue that may put the Panasonics (at least the XW350 & 450) off his list is that you would be paying extra for the ability to record to DVD (as well as HDD) and although you can record subtitles to the HDD you cannot burn them onto a DVD so this feature would be pretty useless for him.

I'd be surprised if Topfields didn't, but I don't know for sure.

Strange. Do you have a model number? If its the one I think it is then you must record in DR mode to get subtitles. Regards Peter Gillespie Edited May 6, 2010 by pgdownload
mikeathome Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 Topfield do record and display subtitles. Even the $69 Olin from KMART does this (see separate thread).

Its only in a later model that you can record subtitles on this range. This is an early model (in didgital TV) but as mentioned pretty much anything HD these days should have subtitle ability. You could look to buy a more recent version of the EX79 if you want you Dad to have the same machine but subtitle ability. If he doesn't use the DVD then you might be better off looking to a dedicated twin tuner PVR.Regards Peter Gillespie

I've already asked the importers of Dvico and none of their devices do this. Any other recommendations on other brands of media players/recorders that will?
pgdownload Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Media Players are a different kettle of fish. I'm thinking more established dedicated PVRs like the BeyonWiz, Topfield, Panasonic, etc. Do you have a rough budget? Do you actually want a media player or a PVR? Regards Peter Gillespie

If the XW350/450 allow this feature then that maybe an alternative, however, as mentioned there are quite afew HD PVRs that can record subtitles. Personally, I'd steer clear from Dvico from a PVR point of view.

The Homecast HT8000 does it fine. It's interesting to watch the subtitles isn't it? Esp on live programmes. Given that I'm not deaf (despite what the wife says) I'm not sure I'd like to be completely reliant on live subtitles for news and sport, for instance. After all, they don't always get it right!
wa1 Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 i have asked this exact question of the dick smith brand set top box gh5930 (dgtech). I can get it to view subtitles but can't get it to record them. If you have one could you please tell me whether it can record them? or if you can tell from the specs then what should I look for? I've read and read the manual but can't see any mention of whether it can or cant. thanks.
