Ps3 + Ps3 Media Server + Mkv With Dts Hd-ma

Recommended Posts

HI all,

Just wondering it anyone else uses the above combination with MKV's and DTS HD-MA audio track. Ive only recently started encoding MKV with HD audio and am finding that when you start playing back the file via PS3 Media Server, the audio cuts out after about 1 minute. Stop the video and resume and it plays again but then cuts out again. Seems PS3 Media Server has issues dealing with the core DTS track in the DTS HD-MA audio track. Obviously it wont pass the DTS HD-MA track but would expect it should be able to deal with the DTS core at least?

The MKV part is the video? Ive never been able to play those type of files on the PS3, had to convert them using the RED KAWA PS3 converter. Had a similair problem with a download that was also DTS, ran it through the converter to fix the audio also. Its a great program, free, hope that helps,

cheers,

Peter

PS3 media Server streams them perfectly. Have been doing it for some months now ith no issues. Conversion to another file format is just plain pointless.

I don't believe the MKV container format will allow you to hold HD audio codecs.

Yes it does. Has been the case sincelate last year. A number of the NMT on the market can play them fine but seems the PS3 Media Server software doesnt like it. My Astone plays them but it only plays the DTS core and not the full HD audio track.

You might like to try MKV2VOB for converting MKV to a format that will play on the PS3 (just another option you may not be familiar with). It's usually just a container change as the PS3 doesn't like the MKV container but the audio and video in it is fine. The utility will simply change the container to something else, ie. VOB or MP4 which the PS3 can recognise.

Having said that of course, PS3 Media Server is a much better option because as said you don't need to bother converting. MKVs will just work, being transcoded on the fly by the host PC.
