Hi all,

I wonder if any one can help my 5000 pvrt masterpiece has required re formatting 3 times in the last 10 days loosing all recorded programs in the process.

Am I doing something wrong

System operates through Sony home theater DS3200ES to Sony Bravia 40" LCD tv

The system is switched on and off on the unit as is the Sony tv & home theater and this has been consistent for the past couple of years.

The System ID is 1426

Loader version L4.08

Device Version V5.2269

Application Version TFNNP593.71.73

last update May 11 2005

Any clues on what may be causing the problem? & what I can do to remedy it?

Thanks in advance

Odds are either the hard disk is on its way out or the power supply is going AWOL and causing the disk problems. The disk is replaceable without too much hassle but you would have to know what you are doing to repair / replace the PSU components. Tonymy is a reg on here and handy with such things, but if you are not based near Sydney that may not be of much use to you. I am sure you can find someone who is handy with a soldering iron near you, though, and the details can be found on this site, somewhere, IIRC.

My 5000MP is still going strong more than a year after the updates to PSU capacitors and increasing the disk to 500 GB and I think I bought mine in about 2005. So it could well be worth getting it repaired.

Cheers,

Al.

Lots of info on the topfield forum about fixing power supplies.

Thanks Audiohobs & jafffaman,

I will do a search on replacing PSU's & hard Disc.

Is one brand is Hard disc better (quieter) than an other?

Lew

Most HDDs available are quieter than the original Topfield one, so you can't go too far wrong. I went for a 500GB Western Digital IDE drive and it is quieter, draws less power (just) and is much, much bigger capacity.

Cheers,

Al.

Try and get the lowest power one you can - less power = less heat = good. Seagate and WD both do some low power drives which you should be able to get with an IDE interface. Almost any new drive will be quieter than the original - things have come a long way in a few years.

I remember when I first got my 5000. I woke up during the night and could hear this scratching sound - like a rat gnawing at wood. It was only after I went to investigate I realised it was the sound of the HDD recording a programme on a timer.

Six years on that 80GB drive is still hanging in there.

different problem with my 5000pvrt. while trying to reset something in settings the other day i have mistakenly changed a setting that has given me no picture. i have sound but cant see anything. im guessing ive accidentally changed the video output or something like that.

the issue i have is that with out a picture i cant see what menu and settings i need to adjust.

is there a simple factory reset or something i can do without the need to see a display? or is there another option?

thanks for your help.

There is always a composite (yellow) output from your Toppy. Connect this to your TV and you can see the menu's.

Hi All,

Thankfully with the support of those who replied, & about $9.00 for capacitors from Jay car, The MP 5000 is up & running again with out a hitch. Total time to install new capacitors 40 mins. Not including the downloading of photos & directions from Web.

I have a second set of capacitors for my 2nd MP 5000 for when it goes on the blink.

I did not upgrade the hard drive to 500gb as ide hard discs seem to be thin on the ground. is there a good source of the ide to sata " gender bender" mini boards available any whre?

thanks in advance

Total time until you have to install new ones, about 40days. The Jaycar ones are garbage (please see countless threads on this subject now, and a sticky thread on the http://www.i-topfield.com.au for what is the best caps to get).
