Hey guys,

It's a bit urgent as the painter wanted a final colour before goes ahead with his work :)

My HT room is 5.3mx4.3m and the ceiling height is 2.55m. The room will have bulkheads as well as 14 downlights (12 surrounding the room and 2 in the centre).

I was thinking of going with dark olive colour, so that it could match the carpet. What colour should I got for the ceiling ? Would 2 step lighter shade be good enough ?

At later stages, I'm thinking of even getting curtains all around the room but it's too early to talk about it now.

I will be using a projector screen with 2.35 projector screen.

Thanks :)

Mines off white and it;s fine

U running a grey screen or matte white? I find with the Matte white screen, I do still pick up quite a bit of light from the ceiling as the rest of my room is dark.

No white screen - there is fair amount of header on the pull down though (to get it optimum viewing height). To me the walls made the most difference, as soon as I painted them it was a huge improvement.

+1 The walls made a huge difference (dark curtains for me mainly) but I do regret not doing the ceiling.

Thanks for posting up these colours guys.

I really appreciate it.

I'm heading towards either the dark olive to match the carpet, or dark grey for the screen wall and lighter shades on the rest.

Looking at the images above, I see that the ceiling colour is darker than the rest, why is that?

Wouldn't the dark colour make you suffocate when you enter the room?

The darker the ceiling, the less reflected lght you see from the screen which improves perceived contrast ratios.

This also allows you you run the PJ on a lower lamp setting which extends the globe life.

It can be a bit oppressive for a multi use room (eg. lounge or family room) but in a dedicated room you spend most of your time in as close to complete darkness as possible so not an issue.

My room is multi use, music & HT, which is why I've chose the Blue tones, when listening to music I leave the ropelights on which give a lovely, cool, relaxed ambiance.

This is my room:

It's the blackest black I could find, with the walls "Red Siren." Those colours make it perpetual night time but that suits me fine as it's a HT room. It's the one room where you can break rules with colours! Is the black oppressive? Not to me. I wanted it to be like the night sky and disappear and any colour in it would make it more visible. I didn't quite achieve my ideal as some light leakage from the lights still lets you see that there is a ceiling. The track lights also prevent cutting holes in the ceiling as acoustic leaks.

Paint isn't that expensive - if you don't like your first choice, you can always try something else. Good luck with it!

PS - no one has yet suffocated in my room. I've heard comments like "this room is so relaxing!" Who would have thought that? With a feiry red and black ceiling ... say to people you're thinking of using colours like that and you'll get comments like "suffocating" "too intense" "make the room feel small" but to me this was the first room to renovate and it's my cave to relax in and unwind.

PS2 - love the black and blue!

Very nice. We are in the process of converting our lounge into a more dedicated HT room too. I intend to paint the ceiling black and have simple effects lighting around the perimeter as I have a bevy of framed original theatre posters. Called in at Bristol yesterday. They have a new paint line called "nouveau" which is an ultra flat, washable acrylic. I think I will try it.Haven't made up my mind re the walls as there are full length curtains on 2 sides, but the ceiling is a definite for black which will also cover some of the plaster faults (the house is 34 years old). If I don't like it - I'll just repaint!

I feel going for colours closest to the grey scale are best for preserving image quality as reflections off such 'coloured walls' will induce next to no colour shift on the screen. Where as a reflection off a red wall for example will cause a colour shift on the screen.

We used a colour called elephant walk pictured here......

Was the ceiling the same as the walls? Can't remember.

Munsell grey?

We decided to go with English Castle (dark grey) for the feature wall as well as the ceiling.

We'll leave all other walls white. We might paint them some other colour at a later stage.

If going PJ set-up then perhaps make the ceiling and screen wall darker and if you are after a bit of contrast then the side walls and rear wall could be a couple of shades lighter.

I am painting my room as we speak and have used Solver Monastery on ceiling and PJ wall and Solver Wallaby on side and rear walls. Flat paint for ceiling and PJ wall, then low sheen for side and rear because you can wipe marks off a low sheen wall without damaging the finish (good if you got kids lol)

How do you find out the code of each paint is ?

Dulux and Wattyl do not have search options for colours, so quoting paint names isn't really handy :)

I'm going to do the same thing. The projector screen and ceiling will have the same dark colour (English Castle A73w which is a shade between grey and brown), and will leave the side and back walls white.

Well ... as most of you have seen in my thread

I used four different paints (colours) in my room. I used Dulux River Rock finish (which has got a rough matt finish) all the walls except the screen wall.

Screen Wall - Blackest Matt I could get my hands on. It was Nippon Paint

Side Walls - Dulux River Rock - burgundy sort of colour code F7

Ceiling - Dulux River Rock - Grayish colour - Colour code F21

Back Wall - Dulux River Rock - Blueish Purple sort of a colour - Colour code F2

The beauty is you can get the matching Dulux Wash & Wear colours in low or high sheen for doors, window frames etc

I found a really nice grey.

She has taken a liking to Broke"s monastery and wallaby!
