With this upgrade coming out then do you think there will be a new model coming out or not?

I am looking at purchasing the Denon AVR-3808 however am not sure if I should hold off if there is a new '09 model to come out later on.

Any thoughts?

The article linked to refers to it as a firmware upgrade which would indicate that the existing 3808 and 4308 models should be capable of doing this one upgraded.

Looks like I just answered my own question. It would seem the 3808 and the 4308 will be carried on into 2009. According to this article anyway.

I got that impression also but was a little perlexed about the charge to have it available? 100 Euro's, so would say that's about AU$200. Worth it but wondering how it's done if it's an online upgrade, maybe by serial number? Guess we will just have to wait :)

I would say that it will be by either serial number or mac address. Pretty simple and great that they offer such a extensive firmware update for a modest price rather than force people to buy a new reciever.

Couldn't agree more, think it's a fantastic thing that finally someone is using technology for the benefit of the end users and yes a modest price for such a great function update. I believe the Premier Denon Dealers conference is end of August so I suspect our dealers will know more of this then.

so denon will be charging customers $200 for a download that will upgrade the receivers so they have dynamic volume control ?

seems a bit steep ?

i suppose that eventually the newest versions of these models will have this upgrade included ?

i suppose it's cheaper than a $500 cat5 cable....

I see you've never paid $1000 for a thx ultra2 upgrade :D Seems reasonable when youve had an onkyo

Holy molly.. Didn't realise the AUD is so strong against the pound now....

Technically it's not CAT5, CAT5 is UTP, and the Denon Link are using STP... I think that was a marketing gimick, it sure raised the profile of D&M for a while... Even negative news are good news when you think in marketing terms.

That said, I wonder how this will work, click on the "Check New Feature", and it will prompt me to enter a credit card number via the OSD? lol... Maybe it works by the Denon MAC? I wonder if I can spoof it and get a free upgrade... :P Easier even if all it needs is a serial number....

If only they have a firmware upgrade to "upgrade" DCDi to HQV, that is the upgrade worth having and paying for.

The $200 was a guess, the article stated 100 Euro's, NOT GBP, so around AU$170 going by today's exchange rate but we all know what people get charged in Europe won't necessarily reflect what we will pay in Australia unfortunately.

Would love DCDi to HQV upgrade but I think we all know that ain't gonna happen. Would've been happy paying the money for a larger unit, but only in silver so the 4308 is the furthest up you can go in black, fussy I know but when you have a 19" rack full of black components it's a bit difficult to put something in silver (or premium silver) but we all have different tastes!

Mine is the Singapore model.. Wonder if the upgrade is any cheaper ^_^.... Still, I don't really see the importance of this feature really... If I'm taking the upgrade, I'm more like testing the upgrade process than the upgrade itself....

Silver is the new black... :P IMO it's more attractive than black... Problem is silver doesn't really work in a dark room though.

You wouldn't find Audyssey Dynamic Volume useful? I know I would but maybe I'm just getting deaf ;).

Not forever... surely you would upgrade in a few years time when something bigger and better is here :).

Hence I said we all like different things :D.

Well, I like what's it's doing, i.e. maintain the same dynamic range at all volumes... that is definitely a good thing... But I seldom adjust my volume (if ever), and at my current level, I think the quality is good enough (I'm sure with the upgrade the range will be better)...

If I'm ever going to upgrade, it's more for the CEC feature..

Maybe, maybe not.. I'm not so sure i'm that interested in HT anymore.... :(

You can always spray paint... :P Funny that, although Black is a rarer colour, at that time it's actualy harder for me to get the silver one, I have to try thrice as the first two stores has only blacks in store (which is really really rare)....

Not interested in HT anymore? :o Oh well, each to their own, it still gives me my jollies but then I don't get out a great deal, lol.

If I have a $1 for everytime someone suggested that, yes I could, but it's not the same... and I couldn't bring myself to spray paint something that cost $10K, imagine the explaining I'd have to do when it went in for warranty repair? Doh!

I don't go out that often as well though, stuck home due to high fuel prices and other costs... I find sleeping is a great hobby... :P

You have kids, or grand kids?? Just leave a spray can with 'em and hope they'd do the rest... I'm sure you can think of something when you send it in for warranty repairs..

Reminds me of what I've done. Let me see what I've done as a kid (at least the ones I remember) many moons ago...

1) Removed the grill, poke a hole through the speaker woofer (who knew it's made of paper or something similiar?), and covered it back

2) Debadged the speaker

3) Used LPs as dominos and frisbees

4) Broke the pin thingie on the LP player

5) Never leave LPs under the hot Singapore sun, even when indoors

6) Never climb on top of the speaker

7) The amplifier ventilation holes are not piggy bank coin slots

8) Broke the tuning or volume knob of a tuner, can't remember which

Fond memories..... :P

Update: Tried the "Check New Feature" just now, nothing... Updated to latest firmware, and tried the check again, and still nothing... Reall intrigued as to how all this is going to work... :P

You Beauty ^_^

This is definitely on my list.

The price seems fair to me, considering the Audyssey licensing fees have to be considered, and the amount of work to produce the firmware upgrade.

Great one Denon.

Finally have an AV receiver that is future proof - Kinda.

This is awesome news. When I originally read about Denon releasing new receivers with Audyssey Dynamic EQ I was a little bummed that my recently purchased AVP-A1HD didn't have this feature. Now it's a simple firmware upgrade away. Love it!

Completely agree, it is awesome news. But I think all those that have purchased a unit recently are interested if this would come as a free upgrade or to be paid for. Maybe if your unit is less than a year old then you are entitled to a complimentary upgrade? Who knows, guess we will just have to wait to find out.

I was actually just wondering last night when this would be available, had a movie on quieter than normal (had elderly guests over) and lost dynamics.
