adumicic Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I was told by a JB staff member (I know, not nesecarily the most reliable source) that if I'm not ready to buy a new Blu-Ray player now that I should wait till the first half of next year as apparently Pioneer's next range of Blu-Ray players will all be region free for Blu-Ray... Like I said it's firmly in the rumor column now, but what do you guys think? It there any merit to the statement? Personally I'm not sure about it, but I do see it as feasible, maybe even likely. Pioneer were one of the earlier companies to start releasing region free DVD players so maybe it is true. Fingers crossed I guess!
BenjaminG Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I wouldn't believe a thing that came out the mouth of a JB Hi Fi salesmans mouth, unless I could see it with my own eyes.
huggy Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Dude! I was told by a JB HiFi manager, that the sony bluray player was region free ( don't remember which model)he wastold by the sony rep, when I explained to him how unlikely it was, especially for a sony player,he made it sound like a "sony rep" was a much more reliable source of info than anything I had to offer. After that day I relized that not only the salemen themselves are ****wits but their reps are also not the sharpest tool. I advise anyone that I know "not" to believe anything salesmen have to say these days ( exeptions dont break the rule)especially the morons that work at jb,harvey, and good guys. Having said that,I hope I am wrong as I'd love a mod-free, region-free player.
50mxe20 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Having said that,I hope I am wrong as I'd love a mod-free, region-free player. So say we all!!

sol381 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 (edited) i went in to jb the other day looking at blu ray players and was talking to a salesman and said the only player you have here that is suitable is the sony 550 because i dont have a hdmi receiver. i would run analogue out and let the player decode the hd codecs. he said you will still only get basic dts because you havent got a receiver that can decode.. i said the player will decode. anyway we almost had a blue.. he said ill check with another salesman.. 5 minutes later he came back sheepish and said youre right ... what a wanker. I know there are a lot of dumb sales people out there, some sales people accualty do some form of research into products they are selling including myself, so do not trainish all sales people with same idiot brush. and i usually take what my reps say with grain of salt because they are just sales people too and they are just trying to sell their product.

There already is a mod-free all region BDP and cheap too at less than $300...The Soniq BD player is I read/hear, do a search on the forum here.

Give me some credit and yes I did make it clear by asking is it BLU RAY region free? I know there are a lot of dumb sales people out there, some sales people accualty do some form of research into products they are selling including myself, so do not trainish all sales people with same idiot brush. Did you even bother to read my whole post? especially the part that states "exceptions dont break the rule"? There already is a mod-free all region BDP and cheap too at less than $300...The Soniq BD player is I read/hear, do a search on the forum here. This, I am aware of,and I should've said " a well known, mainstrean, bigbrand, popular, something tried and tested etc..etc"but coul'dnt be bothered at the time I'm actually looking at buying this player in the coming weeks.
bernievink Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 There already is a mod-free all region BDP and cheap too at less than $300...The Soniq BD player is I read/hear, do a search on the forum here. IMHO the Soniq is not a region free player. It is a player that can be switched between regions by special codes on the remote control. the description of a region free player is one where you dont need to do anything, but insert blu-ray discs from any region and they will play automatically. Regards

Any other players besides a pc one for that price? Edited December 2, 2008 by ministry

tonyjg Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 is it me - or just the Miranda JB store - that the 'sales' staff are getting YOUNGER ?? It's becoming PLAINLY OBVIOUS where JB forsees its 'fortunes' in - and thats in the PC / Laptop / Computer accessories market. They have been expanding their areas at the cost of the DVD/CD sections. Their sales people now walk around in thongs and singlets - and are barely out of their teens. The only way of 'identifying' their sales staff are their lanyards - otherwise they could be just a customer. And you then wonder..... are these teens in these area going to really KNOW what I want ????? Put simply - if you are looking to buy anything in JB - any product - KNOW the product yourself, DO your own research on what it does, and what prices it has been going for, before even trying to grab the attention of one of their young staff. (Its almost becoming the Maccas of Electronic / Music stores !!)

(Its almost becoming the Maccas of Electronic / Music stores !!) I will say one thing, the girl at JB Hifi Miranda in charge of the digital cameras really knew her stuff when I went shopping before Xmas. Was familiar with most of the cameras, could tell you actual specs and not just megapixel counts, how they handed various light levels, the aperture ranges, which cameras recorded in H.264 and not MJPEG and at what framerates, had no problem suggesting memory cards could be bought elsewhere...etc. I obviously can't say that for the rest of them, especially in the hifi department.
