mrdenn1s Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 I have my PC with 20gb of music in my study. I have run an ethernet connection from my router in the study to the TV room. In the TV room i have an Onkyo 606 and Pioneer 507XDA I have wired up zone 2 of the Onkyo to my outside speakers What I want to acheive is to be able to stream music on demand from my PC to the Onkyo, and also surf the internet on the Pioneer. Someone suggested buying and Xbox 360 and using that as the bridge to be able to do both. Is there a better solution out there? Gaming is not a necessary party of the equation and I'm worried that it's a "junkie" solution...ie Xbox needs Xbox only accesories and is build poorly. Can the PS3 media stream from my PC? All suggestions welcome Thanks in advance Dennis
50mxe20 Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 (edited) I am guessing that you can't stream direct to the Onkyo 606? Higher level AVRs allow this. The Popcorn Hour will allow you to do it. As would an Xbox or even and Xbox 360. Or a Squeezebox Duet is another way to go. There are other solutions but those options listed are relatively cheap. Personally I use the AVR but it is a higher level AVR than the 606. Edit Add: You might get more responses if you posted in the HT forum rather than OT. Edited December 1, 2008 by Lyle
Gutty Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 If your PC has wireless capabilities and you're happy to use iTunes the Apple Airport Express is the simple answer for your music. Some info on it here. Could require a wireless card for your PC if not already capable. And if you already have cable in place, probably one of Lyles suggestions would be a better option.

I was looking at the xbox but it seems flakey in regards to build. PS3 looks like the most robust option. Do Squeezsebox and Popcorn Hour have surfing ability?

Even torrent (although I have no idea how efficient it is cause I've not tried it).But is will stream just about everything - audio and video (except HD .iso's). See my review in the Popcorn Hour thread. The Squeezebox is music only. There are several threads on the Squeezebox. I also had an Xbox for awhile but I had trouble configuring it. My son's Xbox360 does the job too but I don't like to use it as it's not mine. For Those Interested In Popcorn Hour Media Streamers Squeezebox Duet The best solution though is to get an AVR that streams music because it is a superb solution, of the AVR is a good one.
mrdenn1s Posted December 1, 2008 Author Posted December 1, 2008 Lyle, Great info How does the PCH let you control a web browser? I couldnt see reference to it on the PCH website. Does it just act as a portal into your PC, and a USB keyboard and mouse in the PCH can then control your PC? Thanks Dennis
50mxe20 Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 It's just a media server. You switch your AVR to it and it sees what is on the PC or the internal HDD (or the www?). One can control some things with the remote but it is pretty primitive. Not sure how it works when accessing the internet. I see your point. I don't know if it will take a keyboard or not. Would certainly be good if it did. I will try to check this out.
