Recently whilst copying recorded TV prog from HDD to DVD-DL failed to complete copy, DVD-DL removed and another blank DVD-DL was inserted to try copy again however unit would not read, format or record and when a movie DVD was attempted to play it could not be read either.

It was noted that even when the DVD was removed the display DVD icon was showing on the front panel.

Has anyone had a similar situation and do you think the DVD laser reader could have perished? :(

You could try turning off the unit at the wall power switch and leave for 10 minutes or so, then power back up and see if the reboot fixes things. I'm not sure it will, but it's worth a shot.

Otherwise it's probably a warranty repair job.

I had an issue with a EX77 where I inserted a badly burnt disc and it got locked in a loop trying to read; the eject button would not work and I had to disconnect the power to the unit at the wall for it to reset and enable the disc to be ejected. I think sometimes a read problem can lock these devices into an endless loop.

Thanks Ian I did all that and no luck, however I found a UK Forum that had similar Panasonic DVDR problems and some solutions, one of which I am going to attempt before I take it to a Panasonic Service agent, by the way its out of warranty now so may as well try, it requires removal of the DVDR top cover and the DVD unit top cover for access to the DVD drive spindle assembly, the spindle is carefully cleaned using Isopropyl with a cotton bud, a few of the forum correspondents confirmed that the procedure returned their unit to its former "as new conditon" I hope it works but dont have any allusions. ^_^
