cjgolf Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Is there any truth to the idea of getting a supposedly higher quality coax cable than the coax cable usually found in most homes ( I think that coax is what it is called ). I have a new plasma TV and the picture is great to me but I am no expert. Happy to buy a new cable if it will provide a benefit. Maybe "cables ain't cables". Any product recommendations? Length - is it also true you should go for the shortest possible cable so as to minimise signal loss.
davep Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Shouldnt affect digital signals? If you're going down that route, then you may as well make sure your antenna is getting 100% signals, and re-cord the wire from the antenna to the plug. Pretty pointless though.
mtv Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Typical moulded-plug flyleads are generally not well shielded and can pick up interference from electrical power cables etc They also have higher signal loss, compared to a quality cable like RG6 Quadshield... which has (as the name suggests) 4 layers of shielding, and much lower signal loss figures.... this is particularly noticable with longer cables. If you don't have any reception issues currently (eg: pixellation, loss of reception) then changing the flylead probably isn't going to make any difference.

diesel Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Thanks. Where do I get such a cable? Dick Smiths, Jaycar, electrical wholesalers...anywhere that sells antenna cables
cjgolf Posted November 28, 2008 Author Posted November 28, 2008 (edited) I found a cable stamped with E83032 F6SSVV (UL) CATV - does anybody know what it is? It is thicker than the usual cable I originally referred to. It has the connectors for antenna socket and TV - the shiny ones that are at right angles. 1 metre in length. Maybe it is a better cable. It looks like it is to be used for this purpose but I don't recall where it came from. Edited November 28, 2008 by cjgolf

mtv Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 I have a new plasma TV and the picture is great to me. If it's RG6, then it's a good quality cable, but as I mentioned in my previous post, if you don't have a reception problem with the existing cable, then changing a cable won't make it any better.
diesel Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 as I mentioned in my previous post, if you don't have a reception problem with the existing cable, then changing a cable won't make it any better. ...too true!
