RyanP1503560385 Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 (edited) Gday All, Am interested in a 50" of above, but have 2 young children, a PS3 and a PVR. Does anyone else have this mix and had it lead to IR or BI ? From network logos ( say from Olympics / Cricket / Lego Star Wars etc etc ) I have read the "Sticky" Plasma Burn In thread, but a lot of that seems to be older posts, I am specifically interested in the performance of the Panasonic 800/850A TVs. Sepcifically, if you did get some IR or BI, what chain of events caused it ? Regards RyanP Edited November 26, 2008 by RyanP

Regards RyanP I've just purchased the 800a so I am interested too. I noted those posts as well RyanP, and those that I read were very old (3+ years), and one would hope the plasmas have increased in technology since then!

Regards RyanP I have the 50" 80a and I have had no problems and I also have a PS3 and play it all the time just dont go pausing for a long time and you will be right Plasmas has come a long way and IR and BI is no longer a problem as long as you treat it right. Cheers Bob
Raja Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I have had my 800A since July. I have seen image retention only after very long xbox360 gaming (and PS3) sessions. However, these have only been noticable when the TV is switched to an unused AV channel (black screen). But to see them i need to turn the lights off. In normal viewing (such as switching to DTV after gaming) i see no evidence of IR.

Maybe the 800/850A might be suited to my needs after all. Regards RyanP
peterjcat Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 I have an 800 and have experienced mild IR on one occasion. I have an HTPC hooked up to it and one night accidentally left the TV on all night showing the desktop, no screensaver or anything. So that was about 10 hours with a static high-contrast image, and well within the first 200 hours of use. So I thought the thing was fried but the IR was in fact quite faint and running FTA over it for an hour or so washed it right out. Very impressed.

Thanks Peterjcat, that makes me feel a lot better and I hope that it gives RyanP some direction. I too have an 800A and I'm paranoid about BI and crack the shites with any of the family if they so much as leave an EPG on for any length of time. I know I'm unreasonable and take a lot from the many posts that would indicate that BI/IR is not as much as an issue as it was with earlier plasmas. Graeme
Tweet Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 The fact that one so often plays 2.35:1 formated movies (BR/HDDVD/DVD) for hours on end and still IR ceases to be a factor is testimony to how good these plasmas have become. The solution of course is in the normal use of the plasma as a 16:9 TV as well as for 2.35:1 movies, in that way it is self-healing. C.M
diesel Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Gday All,Am interested in a 50" of above, but have 2 young children, a PS3 and a PVR. Does anyone else have this mix and had it lead to IR or BI ? From network logos ( say from Olympics / Cricket / Lego Star Wars etc etc ) I have an older gen Panny 50" with two kids, a PVR, DVD, PS2 and Wii and it gets plenty of pausing and menu screens and no BR and very little IR...maybe less than ahalf dozen times You'll have nothing to worry about, unless you leave a static image on for a month
Dave85 Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I got the 50" panasonic 800A with a PS3, played GTA all day for like 10 hours straight (I was really bored and quite hung over) and had no IR or BI. These are really great plasmas, so take the idea of IR and BI out of your mind and just go buy it, you won't regret it. I have yet to see anyone with one of these plasmas that has suffered from the problem. Dave
fredofrog Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 (edited) You would have to have it on the same picture frame for a long time (hours) to have even temporary IR. Just knock back the contrast and brightness from shop to home (all below 50%) and use cool setting (if you have it). I have some IR after using PS (once) and when there was menu sitting unattended from the PVR, otherwise treat it kindly and IR/BI are almost history. Edited December 2, 2008 by fredofrog
gotkids Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 I've had my 850A for around a month now, 4 small kids and its hooked to a HTPC. Kids watch movies etc all the time. I use it for a little web browsing but haven't hooked the xbox360 or Wii to it yet. I do notice some IR every now and then but its only noticeable in a completely dark room on a null input. I clear it almost instantly by switching to the analogue tuner (which is snow) for 30secs and then its gone. I don't use the inbuilt tuner (never even hooked it up) cause the HTPC does it all. Brilliant TV for making even my poorest DivX movies and shows look good, and the blu-rays are amazing. Burn in would be pretty hard to do on these sets, you'd have to have the contrast over 80 and drive a static image for quite a few hours to damage it I think. I have only set the contrast to 60 and brightness to 40.......otherwise its too bright.

What htpc software, and how does sports look on this model?
shiftybugger Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Hi Gotkids, I have a htpc and am looking at the 850A also. What graphics card do use ? What htpc software, and how does sports look on this model? I have the 800A and am using it with a htpc. I am just using the onboard graphics on my motherboard (Nvidia 8300). It has HDMI out so that's all I need. I am (or will be when I have finished setting it up) running MythTV and XBMC on Linux. Haven't been able to test it on sports yet. Glad to hear that burn in isn't too much of an issue. I was hoping to watch a LOT of cricket on it over the summer and the watermark had me worried.

Compared the the LCD's these plasma's seem to have a lot of reflection. I am a bit worried about that, what are peoples experience with this on the 50PZ800A and 50PZ850A? thanks
