philby85 Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Hi Guys, Does anybody have an experience with the above. I am looking for an all in one HDTV, all media player. I have tried media pc's ( windows and mac) I just dont think they pass the appliance test. That is they dont act like a simple appliance, there's always configuring to do etc. The only other option I have is a ps3 and playtv. The only problem I have is the interface for playing media files is bland, no cover art synopsis etc. What is the PVR interface on the 6500a like to use? I know its basic, does it compare to the playtv or a basic PVR unit? cheers Phil

I used to sell quite a few Mediagate boxes and this I am hoping will be a good replacement. The PVR functionality is very basic and I wouldn't expect any more out of it than perhaps the occasional recording of a program. It is no substitute for a proper PVR. The picture quality through the tuner is 95% of my Topfield and it plays any file I have thrown at it to date, including a couple of my BluRay discs I ripped. Overall I am quite happy with it, but I still prefer the Mediagate 350HD for total ease of use.

At the moment I am using a mac mini for HDTV with EyeTV. An apple tv for ripped movies and rentals. A ps3 for games. I was hoping to minimise what I had. I think the 6500a may suit me as I only record the occasional program. Does the PVR pass WAF? cheers Phil

Schwein Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 ....Does the PVR pass WAF? Not really. Whilst you can schedule a program to record relatively easily, there is no option for padding the program which is absolutely essential on FTA stations. Also, you can't play any other file whilst recording. I have also been having audio issues over HDMI with the latest beta firmware which requires switching everything off and then switching it back on with the Dvico last in the startup sequence. Minor niggles that I hope will be sorted soon otherwise the MG450HD will be back in service! Overall the only real bonus is MKV support and Blu-Ray rips.

Thanks Schwein, I appreciate the frank reply I was hoping this would be a great all in one box. Maybe next model? cheers Phil
