BladeRnR Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 (edited) I recieved the Oz Theatre Screens 130" Majestic Scope last Thursday 20/11/2008. What follows are just my impressions upon putting the screen together, packaging etc. Note I have not setup the Projector as yet so I will not comment on IQ just yet. Packaging - 10/10. The box is enormous with a large number of foam inserts to protect the frame. The screen material is wrapped in brown paper and not at all exposed. All parts required are in a zip tight bag. A CD is provided which contains the manual via a .PDF document. Instructions - 9/10. Clear and concise with detailed pictures of all steps and a parts list. Frame - 10/10. The frame is constructed of a light aluminium extrusion covered in a very black felt. The machining is extremely precise and all 45 degree edges mated perfectly. The bracket system used for joining each corner with grub screws is simple and precise. The frame can be put together by yourself without issue. Screen material - 9/10. The Evolution 3D material is a rubber-like thickish material with a black backing. It comes on a roll wrapped in brown paper and there is enough to hang over the frame by at least 20 cm's all round. Construction - 8/10. Not having put a screen together before it was a bit of a challenge. I suggest you have somebody quite strong with you as you hammer the screen grips into place so they can stretch it out ahead of where you're hammering. You really have to be ultra patient with this step to get the best result which I did. I've seen other systems that employ a grommet/eyelet system which to me might be easier but obviously this is done to save on production costs. The system is almost identical to that of mounting a picture in a frame. Having said that, once complete, the screen is drum tight without a hint of warping, lines or wrinkles. If you follow the instructions precisely you will have a screen that looks absolutely fantastic. Make sure you use/buy a good soft-headed hammer and construct the screen using the drop-sheet (provided) and lay it out on carpet of a large rug. An X-Acto knife is provided to trim the material once you're happy the surface is absolutely flat and wrinkle free. From start to finish it took me about 1.5 hours to complete screen construction with my mate. Overall - 9/10 - I've seen Stewart screens and really I cannot see where the other $6000:00AUD + goes into them. It has to be profit surely? I am stinging now to get the Projector installed to see what this screen can really provide but for $1400:00AUD odd it's an absolute no-brainer. I cannot see why enthusiasts in Australia would look anywhere else for a screen or pay any more than what OZTS charge (Which to me is an absolute bargain). With it just sitting there a 130" screen is certainly imposing I'll report more when the screen is mounted and I have the VPL-VW80 Projector operational. Richard (OZTS) - absolutely outstanding. I really don't know how you do it for the $$$. Cheers Blade Edited November 24, 2008 by BladeRnR
Woodlake Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 (edited) Thanks for the report BladeRnR - good to know. I ordered the same screen on Friday (although with AT material) along with the BenQ w5000 projector. I can concur regarding the service from Ozts - Rich has been great. Can't wait to receive mine, although my dedicated room is still quite a way off being ready.... Woodlake Edited November 24, 2008 by Woodlake

You won't be disappointed in this screen mate it's absolutely fantastic. It will be awesome in a dedicated room.
SimonNo10 Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Well it shouldn't be a surprise that the screen material was going to be excellent as you've experienced first hand coming over to my place and seeing BD on it. Unfortunatly not in true HD but it was a huge difference to what I had before and brought new life to my Sanyo Z4. Now all you need to do is turn that room into a Batcave. I've heard black spray paint is good for the windows but not good when you try and sell the house. Good to hear it came together.

The Evolution 3D material made a huge difference to your PQ mate that's for sure. I was lucky enough to get permission to hang a fixed screen but I doubt painting anything black would go down that well! Will have to wait for a dedicated room to do all that. I can dream right? SimonNo10 Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I was lucky enough to get permission Always forget about that part with you Will have to wait for a dedicated room to do all that. I can dream right? Don't we all.
Woodlake Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Blade, Are you planning on using an A-lens or zooming for you new screen? Woodlake
BladeRnR Posted November 25, 2008 Author Posted November 25, 2008 Blade,Are you planning on using an A-lens or zooming for you new screen? Woodlake Gidday Woodlake, I'll be using a Schneider Cine-Digitar 1.33x Anamorphic Lens moved into and out of the Lens path via a Schneider KINO-TORSION mechanism. Cheers Blade
Woodlake Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Nice!! - Look forward to the report once you get it all set up Regards, Woodlake

Hallzy Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I've had my 110" Majestic Fixed Evo 3D screen for a month or so now and I find it great! I bought it and a BenQ W5000 from Richard and haven't looked back . Richard had all the time in the world for my questions and nothing was too much trouble. The screen was fairly easy to put together and everything required was supplied ( except for a soft faced hammer). I've got it set up in a 4.5m x 5.8m dedicated, light controled room and it is simply AWESOME!!! To all the people thinking about buying from OZTS do yourself a favour and do it, you will not look back!
oztheatre Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Thanks for the review Blade, glad it went well for you. I have to show you guys this, we're a little excited here, should prob make a new thread but this will do for now. Mark Techer and myself did some testing of the new Aussiemorphic MK3 yesterday with the new CA corrected prisms. We were blown away, just take a peek at these screen shots at our site Visit My Website screen shots down the bottom. Now I've seen every screen shot over at projector reviews, and I know what shots he uses so we wanted to make some comparisons etc, that's logical. And we'll do a heap more in time. The first Bond shot, I must say, I am yet to see a better image period (Mark took these shots with his tripod setup). I realise Art's shots will be compressed, as ours are also, but wow, these shots are with the sharpness set on 2 out of 8 on my BenQ 5000 on my 135 scope screen, not a 92 incher, this baby is 3156 X 1330! We can go sharper again! Would you also believe the colour is set at 43! This goes to show what optical coating does to transmit the majority of the projectors light. There are no ghost images and the blacks are as black as the BenQ can produce.

Chaffing at the bit now to get the PJ/HT setup after viewing those images. btw the Cinescope explanation on your new site is fantastic. Hopefully things will be ready when The Dark Knight shows up in the mailbox Congrats on the MKIII Richard. This lens in combination with your Majestic Scope screen should make Anamorphic dreams come true for a much larger audience. Anybody I've spoken to about CIH says once you see it you'll never put up with Black Bars (sic) again. Edited November 29, 2008 by BladeRnR

shockvalue Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 (edited) The congrats must go to Mark, I am just lucky enough to be able to assist where I can. Richard/Mark They look great. How do they attach to(or sit in front of) the projector? Can they be used with any 1080p capable projector? Thanks Edited November 29, 2008 by David1
CAVX Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Richard/MarkThey look great. How do they attach to(or sit in front of) the projector? Can they be used with any 1080p capable projector? Thanks Yes it can. Just like any anamorphic lens, the MK3 will sit in the light path to optically expand the image. The new case will have a "pivot" mechanisom as a part of it's stand (rather than the traditional "sled") to allow it to be moved out of the light path when not in use. Like with the MKII, I have engineered a mounting plate to attach everything together. However, the mounting plate is not included... Mark

Michael. P.S. Richard, I still get blown away by my Majestic 130" screen, every time I watch a movie!

Richard, I still get blown away by my Majestic 130" screen, every time I watch a movie! OK - I'm really sucked into this now. Looks freakin awesome How big a HT room am I gonna have to build to fit the 130" screen Think it would be a crime to go any smaller
collinhack Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 I'd say you'd probably want something like a 4.5 m between seats and screen and 3.5m wide wall to accomodate the screen. Easy! ;-) Still very happy with my cinescope screen, even with the zoom method. Perhaps we will fix that one day with the horizon or Aussiemorphic Mk3. A few issues with screen brackets, but Rich has told me the screens are shipping with sturdier brass ones now. Rich, you should definitely make a new thread for the AMk3 if you haven't done so already - looks good!
