Just watching Gladiator on 10HD in Melbourne and it's bloody well in 4:3 wtf! 10's done this several times in the past few weeks with quality movies. I dunno.... Seems a shame and completely defeats the purpose after they've been advertising it all week. Those knuckle-heads disappoint me yet again. :(

Same in Sydney. Idiots.

I turned it off, watching one of my Blu Rays instead! :D

Channel Ten are just preparing for changes next year when their main TenSD channel will change to a low bitrate 4:3 aspect ratio channel to match their analogue channel so they can focus on a high quality OneHS/SD sport channel. This means they don't need to worry about getting movies and dramas in HD or widescreen any more......

I noticed it too here in Melbourne, was gonna cap it until it popped in 4:3, changed the channel watched that kids spy movie on seven hd instead. At least that was 16:9 1080i rather than upscaled 4:3.

That's right. I don't think 10 has had a film in true HD for ages. They just don't bother now.

BD is the only way to go.

I'm waiting for it to come out on BD. Haven't watched it for ages, on purpose.

But this broadcast was a joke - for a movie that was basically THE demo for surround sound when it came out on DVD & very decent visuals to go with it, Ten opt to show it in 4:3 & 2 channels......way to put people off HDTV, Ten.

Doesn't surprise me in the least why so many people are reluctant to make the switch to digital..

What the government should have done was to cancel analogue TV immediately and offer to supply anyone who wanted to, to go their nearest Post Office or supermarket and pick up a basic STB for free...This crap we have to put up with ATM will now go on for years to come...

It's irrelevant whether everyone has a digital STB or not. Ten would have still shown the 4:3 SD version. When Ten showed the 16:9 HD version a few years back it was fantastic, my only guess is that a rat pissed on that copy in storage or it was misplaced so they had to resort to an inferior 4:3 copy this time.

I don't think they will bother securing 16:9 HD copies of some programming from now on as from April they won't be able to show it in HD anyway.

I too was extremly dissapointed to switch over and see it like that. Decided to watch something else. Felt like I was wathcing a really old move having it at that ratio.

Same problem here is Brisbane.

I just turned off, couldn't bring myself to watch 4:3 crap.

And I would have watched the whole thing as well, considering the small amount I watched had scenes that I had never seen before (director's cut maybe? definitely not on the DVD version I have).
