Hi all,

Wharfedales have finally disintergrated after 10 years, the Onkyo amp is still going strong though.

Time for an upgrade, went and had a quick look on the weekend.

Yamaha 663 ($800.00) and a Infinity Primus 360 5.1 pack RRP: $1999.00 could get it for $1400.00

any other combos?

seen the yamaha/KEF 3500 package on eastwood and the reviews sound OK for the speakers but i am not sure they could crank when i want and not sound tinny? The wharfedales i ahd were the Valdus 500, not musical at all but could thump.

Thanks.

Im in the same boat. The Eastwood package with the Kefs sounds ok, but goes against everything Ive learnt, i.e small speakers are crap.

Jamo 606 packages are around 1500 bucks. Wharfedale D9.5 package in todays paper for $1999, same joint. Clef hifi have Jamos down from 1299 to 799. DOsnt say what model tho.

I have to go to Hardly Normals on the weekend, the Southland store saya they have every speaker they sell hooked up to listen to.

I'm in exactly the same budget and situation.

Instead of the 663 yamaha, perhaps look at the HK 255. With the new update just released this fixed most problems that anyone had and turned it into a great little receiver.

Also for speakers I'm looking at getting some possibly from Adelaide Speakers. They seem to be fantastic for their price and as good as speakers quite a bit more expensive.

Hope any of that helped.

+1 for the Adelaide Speakers, alot of speaker for the money.

I think you would get better value for your money if you could squeeze a little more into your budget for a upper mid-range AVR ($1.2k-$1.5k), but then I guess same goes for speakers also. The other option is to get either a better AVR or better speakers for now and then just upgrade which-ever is lacking when you can afford a little more. When I first started out I bought a decent AVR and bought a 5 speaker pack off eBay (Dream Acoustics) for a couple hundred and then a sub from them later. Not very good with music but does a fair job with movies. There is also some Aussie designed speakers made by Accusound on ebay that are sold as a 5.1 pack that you can get for under $700-$800 that might be worth a look at if thats what your budget only allows.

What size room are you putting this gear in, the other option is refurb or 2nd hand. You can get a pretty decent AVR this way which will still cover DD/DTS alot cheaper if it's slightly used or a run-out model/refurb. This also applies to speakers, more value and bang for your bucks. Heck I often see AVR models from a year or two ago that cost $2k + go for $400-$1k.

Hi,

The 2-2.2K budget i have listed is a sale price budget so the speakers would be around the $2K mark for the 5.1 and $1200 for the amp.

I am going to get a dedicated stereo system at a later date.

Thanks.

My opinion is you probably should drop the .1 (subwoofer) if you are really tight on the budget. A good subwoofer is at least $1000 or more. And if the new speakers are going to be use with your dedicated stereo system then it might well worth spend the whole 2.2k on a good stereo pair rather than on 5.0.

Hi,

The dedicated Stereo setup at a later date will comprise all new components.

I can get a Yamaha 663 and Tannoy Mercury F4 package ie: F4 fronts, Centre, rears and 10" sub all for $2350.

Opinions?

Thanks.
