afmartyn Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 (edited) Have an older CRT Philips that for its "HD" input for RGB or component will take 480p/60Hz, 576p 50Hz, or 1080i/60 Hz. Will the componet output of the Xbox produce any of these? Have asked several sales people and keep getting different responses. Pisses me of that they say I need either a Plasma or LCD with HDMI to get HD and that the LCD will give superior picture to the CRT. Doesn't anybody remember the HD CRT TVs of a while ago? Component output on the Xbox can do 1080i and 60Hz. Latch.
davep Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Are you sure it does 1080i/60Hz and not 1080i/50Hz only? I only ask as my old Samsung HD CRT only allowed 480i/p 576 i/p and 1080i/50Hz only - which the 360 doesnt do (unless one of the dash updates fixed this, but I dont believe it did.

You can get it to do 60hz output, but it has to be enabled in the menus. By default I think it might switch to to 50Hz for PAL, but there is definitely an option to enable 60Hz output. In your case you may have to enable 60Hz output while running at one of the 480i / 576i / 576p resolutions. Latch.
davep Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Yup, you can enable 50Hz in SD mode, however, even when you flick back to HD, it doesnt retain the 50Hz. Anyway, not a big issue for the OP as he indicates his accepts 1080i/60Hz and the 360 now gets a Sony VW60 projector on an 88" screen - HD gaming at its best.
iainl Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 If you've got a PAL 360, you need to put the Component lead in standard-def mode first, and switch the preference to 60Hz instead of 50Hz. Otherwise, when you put the lead into HD mode, it will output 1080i at 50Hz as well, and you can't access the option to switch it. It's a thoroughly annoying aspect of the machine that the 50Hz/60Hz switch is only displayed in standard-def mode, and yet it affects everything - some games (Feeding Frenzy is one) that don't have 50Hz modes even refuse to play over VGA, and that's really running at 60Hz at all times.
afmartyn Posted November 14, 2008 Author Posted November 14, 2008 Thanks everybody for the advice, will go out and get one and at $392 at DSE plus a couple of games (kung fu pand and lego indiana) seems like good value. Was also tempted to by the Big W offer today of $268 for arcade version plus 2 games but then would ned to buy a HD cable and the games (arcade and sega tennis) look a bit lame for my kids.
