FMB Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Working on the assumption that, as always, Hollywood would totally screw up a classic, I avoided seeing this at the cinema. But I was eagerly awaiting its BD/DVD release. This morning I was at Garden City (Brisbane) so I decided to grab it. K-Mart had no stock (they're not really morning people). EzyDVD had the BD version for $49.99 (I didn't hang around). So I end up in Big W. I picked up both the BD and DVD versions to do a comparison and here's what I found (based on what's written on the packaging): Picture: DVD 576i BD 1080p Audio: DVD DD5.1 BD DD5.1 (and nothing else) Aspect Ratio: DVD 2.35:1 BD 1.78:1 (what the?) Price: DVD $25.94 BD $36.87 Bonus Features: Pretty much the same but I never look at them anyway Guess which one I left the store with?
Mjr69 Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I am sure that is a mistake on the packaging of the SD DVD and it is really 1.85:1 Review of the BR is disappointing : http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1820/getsmart2008.html
davep Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Not sure how they can give it 3 stars for HD Audio quality, when theres no HD audio track.
tonyjg Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 (edited) Aspect Ratio: DVD 2.35:1 BD 1.78:1 (what the?) Aspect ratios and EDIT CHECKING is not one of the favourite tasks by the Roadshow 'creative cover arts' team !! For other examples - one of The Matrix films on DVD - 1.85:1. Fat Pizza - 2.35:1 - and finally they've corrected the Boondock Saints with 4.3 instead of 16.9 !!! You learn to 'ignore' Roadshow details after a while - and check elsewhere. EDIT - also begs the question - why are you bothering with this IMO 'regurgitated remake' crap ??? and if you DID pick up the DVD - you probably should have waited a month or two when its bound to drastically drop in price. Guess which one I left the store with? oh - and you LEFT with the BLU-RAY because of its higher price in these dire economic times. Edited November 13, 2008 by tonyjg

I too thought this would be "'regurgitated remake' crap " but after being on my 5th international flight in as many weeks i was running out of programs to watch, so i gave this a whirl (note i usually do not enjoy any movie i view 1st on a aero plane tele) surprising i thought it was okay. Although a rip off it tried to be a bit creative and do things a tad differently. Oh and Anne Hathaway

Just doing my bit for the economy. Have to spend my government handout on something. Oh, hang on. I'm not getting a government handout. Good thing I didn't remove the little security sticker. Back she goes.
Mjr69 Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I saw this a while ago and had very low expectations - but was pleasantly surprised by it. A few laugh out loud moments which is unusual for me so I was definitely going to buy it on BR as both the picture and sound in the theatre was great. After the reviews I have decided to give it a miss...
daz_dors Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 EzyDVD had the BD version for $49.99 (I didn't hang around). Why do people even enter this shop? $50 for a blu ray of Get Smart, let alone any other title (excluding box sets) is just ridiculous. I refuse to give them my money.

I refuse to give them my money. I was never going to buy it there. I just had to walk past it to get from K-Mart to Big W and stopped in to see if they had it. They had a table loaded full of BD's marked buy 2 get 1 free but I didn't have time to stop and look. Besides, at their prices, the third one wouldn't really have been free. I should add that I was impressed with Big W's range of BD's and the fact that they now have a dedicated section for them instead of a few wedged in between DVD's.

Good thing I didn't remove the little security sticker. Back she goes. if you live in NSW - then you govt handout would have already been gobbled up by some new fee / toll / charge (not that I'm going to get anything as well. Sorry - but single guys earning over $100K don't really feature on the govt assistance radar (even though we damned should be @@) anyway..... whats left to remake ????????????.... .. Gilligan's Island - the Michael Bay version - borrows the boat from The Island - blows up American and Gilligan is trapped on the island with some pretty boys and girls - with the professor and the skipper roles removed........... .... or .... I Dream of Jeannie - .. Oliver Stone's exploration of how a person can fit in a bottle tied in with some sort of NASA conspiracies.

It brought back good ol memories of watching this after school on tele. I too laughed out load in moments which is also unusual for me. I personally thought the picture was great and am happily keeping it in my collection.
