jingsu6688 Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 I have a Onkyo 605 receiver and am looking for speakers. 1. My budget is around AUD$2000 for a 5.0, not sure if this is a good start. Krix looks and sounds good. Focal may stretch the budget a little bit. Any other brands to recommend? I am hoping to get away from sub for a while, not sure if this is a wise choice. 2. Apart from the box movers, such as JB Hifi, Harvey Norman, etc, where do you guys go and get your speakers? For computer stuff, we have msy, centrecom, is there any store like that in the hifi industry? Thanks a lot.
nis200979 Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Klapp on Chapel Street in Windsor/South Yarra. Love the German Canton speakers if your serious, but they have a good range and where very helpful.

(all black vinyl) And, im in country VIC, so you should be able to get something close (with the sub of course) for $2000 or less.

jingsu6688 Posted November 10, 2008 Author Posted November 10, 2008 Thanks a lot, guys. It is amazing to see so many responses within such a short period of time. I will certainly pay a visit to the stores mentioned in the forum. Regarding brands, I have only heard Krix. nothing else. It looks like lots of people recommend Krix. What about other brands for the price of 5.0 system at about AUD$2000. I can live without sub, but if I can stretch the budget a little bit and get a proper sub, who does not want that. Thanks again.
flukeyluke Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 +1 - and damn fine folk as well! same same

But for $2000 you will be lucky to get 3 Sonus Faber speakers I know their cheapest speaker is around $1400 a pair.

yert Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 With these specialist stores, is there still bargaining? Or is it just the quoted price?
lycos Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 (edited) Haggling is accepted in most of the stores (if that's what you meant) Some stores give less bargain, but you'll get better service and more knowledgeable salesman. Not in my experience. The best price I got was also from the store that provided the best service.
Juz Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Hi, I will also put in a vote for Soundair in Caulfield. I have bought speakers for both my hometheatre and hifi setup too. Very happy. Regards Juz
bsaac Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 My vote goes to Frankston Hifi, Picked up a set of Tannoys from them recently and they had both excellent service and pricing.
gone_bush Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Try Clef in South Melbourne. Very friendly and good prices.
strega Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 (edited) pretty much my first cab of the ranks are in no particular order Cav. Tivoli Klapp Clef Secher Encel My vote goes to Frankston Hifi,Picked up a set of Tannoys from them recently and they had both excellent service and pricing. Thats interesting things must have changed. I promised my self never to set foot in that store about 4/5 years ago. Service and attitude then were dismal on a couple of my visits. All my queries regarding stuff that they didn't carry was dismissed as not very good. At least they carried Martin Logan. Tannoys? well things must have changed. Was very annoyed having B+W pushed at me at the time. May have to eat my words and check them out again,if only it wasn't so far from the inner burbs. Edited April 24, 2009 by strega

Can you, or someone, add what each store tends to specialise in?
