tonyjg Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 (edited) QUESTION : ARE YOU HOLDING OFF BLU-RAY TITLES EVEN THOUGH THE SAME DVD PRICE IS CHEAP OR IS BEING DISCOUNTED QUITE QUICKLY ?? There are several B&M stores having solid DVD sales at the moment. As usual JB has a stack of titles from $9.98 to 12.98 - EzyDVD have just put out a LARGE brochure with many good titles at less than $10 - and inSanity have a 5 for $60 sale ($12 each) - then there's BigW and Target and KMART sales ..... in other words.... THERE'S A STACK OF SALES ON DVDS AT THE MOMENT. There are a stack of titles that I'd OK - think about to get on BLU-RAY but...... they are currently being discounted on DVD : SOUTHLAND TALES - JB $12.98 - NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - EzyDVD recently had this for less than $10 DIE HARD 4 (ok its the single disc version) for 9.99 at EzyDVD 10,000BC - $8.83 at BigW - pizza and beer movie !!! AMERICAN GANGSTER - $12.87 BigW FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL - $12.98 at JB - mmmm - only for Brand and Veronica Mars - but the film is really shite !! HAIRSPRAY and I AM LEGEND 2 DISC EDITIONS - $15.98 at JB and I can add THERE WILL BE BLOOD - this will definitely be cheap soon..... (and given that LOST S4 Blu-ray has a price in the inSANITY brochure for $99.99 your may be holding off any TV shows on Blu at these prices !!!) and the list goes on.......... The question is what are people doing when they see these titles get discounted to these price levels, and in many cases VERY QUICKLY. Do you resist and WAIT WAIT WAIT until the Blu-ray title 'budges' downward in price (LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL are you kidding ??) - or resistance is futile and purchase the DVD just because you are sick of waiting, the film is probably not worth the $40 on Blu-ray, you can't see it reach this price level in the next few months / years - and LIFE IS TOO SHORT; its a guilty pleasure and the extra picture quality / sound quality isn't worth the HiDef experience ????? Also - what other titles are you seeing CHEAP and are holding for a Blu price crash ???? Edited November 9, 2008 by tonyjg
mwd Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 After getting a few HD episodes of TV series recorded I would say some like Lost and Sarah Conner Chronicles maybe Fringe would be nice on Blu-Ray but I think the prices are outrageous how many times do you watch them. I have a few 24 series on DVD and have only ever watched them once. BTW 10,000BC would be expensive at $5.00 One of the world's worst movies IMHO. Bring back Raquel Welsh in CGI

Often the box set Xmas specials have DTS included, otherwise I just rent titles. Cheers Thornton
Mitcon1503562253 Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 For me it depends on the individual movie, I must admit for most I just go SD DVD as the price is the main factor. But if it's a movie I really love that is a knock out on BD then I splash out for the BD. I think it would be 95% SD DVD for me though as to be honest I'm normally happy with DTS/DD and the upsampled image. BD is just so damn expensive and I have to say I wonder if it will really have a good future.
kiwimeat Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 You do have a point but my view is slightly different. I'm going for content over presentation in the first instance. I have actually changed my buying process to only buy movies in HD that I really know I, or other family members, will re-watch multiple times over their lifespan. So for new and upcoming releases I've bought Iron Man and will get Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda, and my Indy IV. Pretty much everything else I am holding out is back catalog movies like LOTR, etc. Everything else is either rented or bought when it is cheap on SD-DVD and watched via 2 x HD-XE1, 1 x Oppo 980 or with my Edge when it arrives.
Chill Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 (edited) Well Of the examples you give: NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - Bought on BD for $15 more than the DVD at the time DIE HARD 4 - Bought on BD for $10 more than DVD at the time 10,000BC - Not interested at any price - AMERICAN GANGSTER - Rented as a ATV HD download - may get BD in time FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL - not really interested but if I did get would be DVD HAIRSPRAY - would rather have pins put slowly into my eyes I AM LEGEND 2 DISC EDITIONS - Bought BD - $10 more than DVD at the time THERE WILL BE BLOOD - Bought BD - $15 more than DVD at the time SOUTHLAND TALES - MMM do not know this one must look it up In all the cases above I would still get the BD even with the now bigger price difference However I do have some BD's bought that I would in retrospect be happy with a cheaper DVD , Alfa Dog for instance. As to the basic question, yes to all options: 1. some new BD's I just must have - extra cost is a non issue and I am prepared to wait a few weeks (although I hate that Day and date of all BD releases is key to the future) 2. some DVD's come out, must have great movie, and it looks a long time to the BD so I get the DVD at around $28 3. some DVD's come out - good movie - wait till it is under $20 3. some movies are just not worth the extra (most chick flicks) 4. I get 5 to 8 "old and discounted" DVD each month - Edited November 9, 2008 by Chill
tonyjg Posted November 9, 2008 Author Posted November 9, 2008 BTW 10,000BC would be expensive at $5.00 One of the world's worst movies IMHO. Bring back Raquel Welsh in CGI lol - THATS what I am getting at on this thread - a $8.83 BIG W purchase of a title like '10,000 BC' for the sake of just seeing what its like - VERSUS - the $40 on Blu-ray. Even at less than $9 I'd be more likely to buy a pizza & beer & mates movie than at $40.

the_wonderchild Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 (edited) For someone who often has a sufficient say in the slate of average BR releases, i found it ironic you mentioned you'd love to buy 10000BC and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Please don't mention it among the likes of No Country for Old Men; it is blasphemy. To answer the topic, i only buy favourites on occasion. Because it's not a regular occurence, i am less concerned about the price for said purchases. Don't buy DVD's anymore either, unless imports/foreign titles. Edited November 9, 2008 by AK Anthony
Chill Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 however - in the short time that you've purchased these - the DVDs have greatly (in most cases) reduced in price - therefore the $10 'gap' is now something like $25+ and my car decpreciated $200 this week just sitting there, that life. However as I said, with the BD's on your list that I do have, I would still get the BD today even with the greater price difference, mind NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN DIE HARD 4 - I AM LEGEND THERE WILL BE BLOOD Are pretty good examples of must have HD movies. all 5 star sound and picture as well as being great watch many times movies IMO.

OK - changed those 2 to 'might consider' - but the intention was more to provide details of films that have been recently released and DROPPED very quickly. ADD to that list films like BE KIND REWIND and Clooney's LEATHERHEADS (crap film) - films discounted in less than being out for one month. So - if you're not buying DVDs.... then..... what are u watching ???
the_wonderchild Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 (edited) So - if you're not buying DVDs.... then..... what are u watching ??? Well, i prefer to rent the DVD's if and only if i am really interested. Other than that, i like many others have a catalogue of HD films to get through when i have spare time (as well as many games, which also count as watching i suppose), and am a devoted sports fan who will watch hours on end if need be (a.k.a - armchair sports enthusiast ) Edited November 9, 2008 by AK Anthony
hazzad Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 Like many others i buy only my favourite absolute must haves. And only then if i see extended value in the extras, that being stuff that adds to the movie experience, and in particular bonus view PIP stuff. Im a sucker for it. BD Live stuff i dont care much for. And when i buy i tend to scour the for sale/trade forums and buy at about $25 so in the end im not paying all that much more. Ive had my PS3 for a year now and have picked up most of my BD's in the last month and as of now i only have about 10 titles. So im very picky and certainly wont buy in like i did for DVD(not that i went crazy there either). I stocked up quite well during the HD DVD sales so have a lot of what i really wanted.
THEMAN Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 CGI heavies I have to own on blurays. More often than not, the highdef experience is truly MADE by the visuals.
phreek Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 I could have got the BD for No Country for Old Men... but bought the DVD last week for $8.99 at Target.
Thornton Melon Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 I could have got the BD for No Country for Old Men... but bought the DVD last week for $8.99 at Target. I rented it on "Tight arse Tuesday"from my video shop for $2. Great movie. Cheers. Thornton
minbin Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 (edited) I rented it on "Tight arse Tuesday"from my video shop for $2. All the tight arses come out on Wednesdays in my area (including myself), but not as tight at $2.95 a pop. Sorry, probably not relevant to the thread... just had a few too early for a Sunday night. Edited November 9, 2008 by minbinpin
SDL Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 Own most of those on BD or HD DVD. Hell what are you going to do, take the money with you? Damn I could have bought a Skoda instead of my Honda, could have bought a smaller house, could have bought a Kogan TV, could have bought a HTIB the list goes on. Why are people so hung up over the Blu-Ray price (which I admit is too dear however) when they waste money knowingly on many otehr things - that is unless you do all your shopping at Best and Less, Op Shop, NQR and Factory seconds stores?

Mayube beacuse not everyone is the same about money as you. Some of us have to think about what we are going to do if we actually live to retire. I dont want to be eating dog food. My priority is paying off my house. The cheaper movies are for me to buy the more i can indulge in them. As it stands i have to reply on buying 2nd hand. I cant afford to buy otherwise.

Im about to get the bourne series for 9 odd dollars each on DVD but am holding off paying the same for Gladiator until I see what they do with the bluray version. Lets face it the DVD's wont go up.

Why not ask why people buy Nike runners instead of Dunlop Volleys, or why they buy Levi Jeans instead of no tag jeans, the list goes on. What TV are you watching? Did you buy the cheapest in the store or the one you wanted? It isn't about what a person earns, it is about what they set as priorities. Buying Blu-Ray over DVD is no different toa myriad of other purchases we make every day.
Leonie Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 I'm satiating my need to spend by buying older movies that won't come out on blu ray for a long time, eg Charlie Chan Collection Volume 4! Also a few BRs when on special locally.
Thornton Melon Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008  All the tight arses come out on Wednesdays in my area (including myself), but not as tight at $2.95 a pop. Sorry, probably not relevant to the thread... just had a few too early for a Sunday night. Yes it is relevant, why pay quite a lot for an "avarage "movie when you can hire it for a few dollars and watch it and save the money for a GREAT movie you want to own and enjoy it at your convienience time and time again. I was robbed to pay $2 for Run Fatboy Run,but I own two different copies of Die Hard, and I will also buy it on Blu Ray. Cheers Thornton
jbl540 Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 Collecting movies is my one vice. I'm not a smoker or a drinker & i love watching films, so that's where my "spare cash" goes. I do have a wishlist on Amazon that includes low priority titles(Fantastic 4, AVP, Chicago, the terminator trilogy & V for Vendetta to name a few) that i'm waiting on what i think is a reasonable price(probably bout $25AUD) before buying, as i already own these on dvd. But given the choice, even with higher prices, i'll buy the BD over standard dvd now. I remember paying $42 on dvd for Forrest Gump when it was first released here & importing titles from the US in the early 2000's at higher prices as BD's are now! I personally buy what i want to buy, i know that everyone is different but that's what makes us all different!!
