Mjr69 Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 I put on a laser disc last night and although the picture was nice and clear it had a milky appearance. The projector info said 480i (connected via s-video to receiver and routed via component to the PJ). The blacks were dark grey and I feel if I could get the contrast boosted it would be more satisfying. Upscaling too? Or should I not try to make a silk purse out of a sows ear?

Sounds like the brightness is too high compared to your other inputs. You need to drop the brightness down - ie. calibrate that with your LD player (If you can .. Hopefully your display remembers the settings for your different inputs and it wont affect your other inputs - ie you can fiddle with the settings for your LD without ruining your other sources 480 is also probably a NTSC disc, so your input(s) also may not be calibrated for NTSC (some displays keep settings for inputs AND signal type: eg you can have different settings for PAL or NTSC or HD on the same input). Depending on the scaler, it will help resolution, but you usually need to pay more $ for the ones that let you adjust the brightness, gamma, contrast, saturation etc.. Worthwhile? - I wouldnt bother, then again I dont have that many LDs! PS: Ive got some LD's for sale (ie that i'd sell) PM me if your interested - my LD player is just taking up space (PS: Wanna buy a denon LD player?) Cheers, Bitey
Mjr69 Posted November 8, 2008 Author Posted November 8, 2008 Thanks for the reply. I can add personal favourites in the PJ menu - so I may try adding one for LDs with a different gamma/contrast etc and see if that helps. I have about 250 LDs and so I'd be only interested in rarer/non available on SD DVD titles... Do you have any that are rare? ... my Pioneer player is still working fine at the moment thanks
Mr.Bitey Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 250! Seems to be a significant investment there Probably cheaper to buy a scaler than replace them (if the same titles are available on bluray/dvd).. I wouldnt know if they were rare (so theyre probably not). I rekon ive only got about 8 :-) <-- v.bad decision to buy when I did damn you impulse buying! damn you Dune! Cheers, Bitey
