CCRider Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 (edited) I was at Vaf research today to listen to their new MK11 DCX G4 speaker. Spoke with Simon Wilde (ex Duntech speaker engineer)who developed both the Mk1 and 2's and was told that the upgrade involved replacing the tweeters with a higher quality pair and adjustment to the cross overs accordingly. Was given an A vs B comparison with the Mark 1 DCX G4 vs Mk11's and must say that the upper mid range and higher frequencies rolled off very smoothly. It was a very notable difference. The Mk1's had a notable sibilance with a particular track involving a female performer. This was non existent in the Mk11's The MK11's sound stage was also noticeably more focused than the Mk1's. According to Simon the new tweeters are made by the same company that supplies tweeters to their signature series range. I was very impressed and now tempted to take all my DCX G4 mk1's for an upgrade. Cost according to VAF is $512 per pair According to Simon Wilde the "new" sound parallels the Duntech gemstones that he developed and constructed whilst at Duntech. There is an upgrade available for all the DC range however I have no info on price. Edited November 8, 2008 by Seismix
CCRider Posted November 12, 2008 Author Posted November 12, 2008 (edited) Just got my upgraded two fronts and custom centre DCX G4's back from VAF. Must say "wow" the improvement is really noticeable after I played my reference Cd's. I called Simon Wilde to say how I was impressed with his re engineering. This guys a little genius. It is no wonder that Grant Badesso of Krix rates this guy as one of the best "cross over" sound engineers around. Those of you that own these speakers should seriously consider this upgrade. I am now saving some cash for all my surrounds Edited November 12, 2008 by Seismix

I am now saving some cash for all my surrounds Hi Seismix, I also have a pair of G4 DC-X's and the "big" custom centre and I love the full-bodied sound they produce. Vaf have a pretty full order book at present so my three will be going in for the upgrade in 6 to 10 weeks from now. I am intrigued as to the improvements the new tweeters will provide and am keenly awaiting Simon's signal to send mine down to Adelaide. Are the DC-6's being upgraded? I am considering buying four of these for side and back surrounds.

Kreyfish Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 did you get to keep your old tweeters/ Unfortunately not. The upgrade must be performed in house as I believe there are some cross-over changes as well. Perhaps there will be an upcoming fire sale of 2nd hand tweeters?
