broke Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Just wondering if anyone has one yet? Looking at turning my CA 540c V2 into an upsampling player. FWIW- also considering 840E 2ch pre. Anyone got any comments regarding this pre and it's performance vs AVR and how functional the HT bypass is?

Anyone got any comments regarding this pre and it's performance vs AVR and how functional the HT bypass is? Have not heard it myself, but have spoken to a forum member recently that was quite dissapointed with the 840E. He ended up going with a Primare Pre30. Merlin audio currently have one going for $2K if at all interested. And just as a heads up, i recently picked up a Musical Fidelity A5cr pre for under $1500AU from UK ebay. Might be another option. No i don't have anything against CA, i have a 640C. Edited November 6, 2008 by Gutty

An A5 is certainly in the mix- I thought it was out of my price range but at that price, very hard to ignore. Did the seller have more? The other consideration was Bel Canto Pre 3. Edit- Found it- Lintone Audio? How much was postage to Aus? Easy to deal with? ps- thanks for the info Gutty. Edited November 7, 2008 by broke

I atually bought mine private, http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...em=150306362983 off a guy that got it from Lintone but decided to move up to the KW series gear. I looked at buying through them, but this one was just that much cheaper. Lintone quoted me 175 pound to ship. Not sure on what it all adds up to though, as i went with the cheaper unit. Mine ended up costing $1470AU including shipping. And try buy when our dollar is good against the pommy pound, i put it off for a few days and saved about $100. Edit: just did the math, and comes in around $1900 from Lintone. Maybe a tad more than the CA 840, but IMO is probably a bit of a step up too. Edited November 7, 2008 by Gutty

Thanks Gutty, still a pretty good deal at $1900, I think it would be very difficult to get that price in Oz. Will be keeping my eyes open on Ebay.

For what it's worth, the previous owner of mine was not origianlly going to ship overseas, nearing the end of auction he had no bids so i hit him up. It has caused a few delays while we sort out an appropriate shipping service, but hopefully all worth it in the end.
Juicester Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 pardon my ignorance, but isn't there going to be the same problem with a pre or power amp shipped from the UK due to voltage differences? or do you already have a step down transformer? If i knew that it worked all right, i would have already paid for a Roksan K2 integrated from the UK.. since they're not going to be out here forever....

If i knew that it worked all right, i would have already paid for a Roksan K2 integrated from the UK.. since they're not going to be out here forever.... UK operates on 220v mains where as we are 240v. Most components will operate comfortably at 220 or 240 without any step down. It is just US @ 110v that requires step down. UK products just require change of mains cable to ozzy 3 pin. Some components have switch that enables them to work at 110 or 220-40v.
Juicester Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 just a change of mains cable eh? my wife is going to hate you for telling me that... cheers for the info. Let the shopping begin......
Gutty Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Think UK is actually 230V, but none the less, what Broke said is correct, just a main cable change and ready to rock.

Gutty Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Have you got your MF A5cr yet Gutty? If so, how is it? Nope... that sale fell through. The seller kept messing me around with Paypal rubbish. Have just made payment on another through an actual shop in UK, cost a couple hundred more, but atleast i'll actually get the product. With any luck will be here by end of week, just in time for my birthday Not exactly counting on it though.
Gutty Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Well Broke, yesterday my A5 arrived from the UK. Pretty much all i can say is WOW Will add my thoughts in Al's review thread. I'm sure you're wondering about the importing side of things. Really was too easy. No work for me at all. Bought the A5 for 600 pound, plus 100 pound for shipping(pre organised with the seller as it was originally a UK only auction). Did the usual ebay business of paying via paypal, supplying my postal address and that was it. One week later it was delivered to my work. No customs, GST, import duty.... nothing at all for me to do.

Read the review and it sounds very impressive, in fact if there is enough coin left over after the speaker purchases I would be happy to buy one of these unheard based on everybodys positive comments. How did you manage no customs or import duty? did they simply not pick it up?

Not real sure, i just know the seller used a door to door service, DHL, which i think helps get stuff through without any hassles. There are fee's involved, but they are all part of the courier costs. Just a heads up, this is currently 200pound cheaper than what i paid, if no one else bids you caould have it landed here for around $1200. Might be worth asking teh seller if he'd ship it

Cant Wait!!! A Musical Fidelity A5cr pre amp? at that price? surely you jest. That website seems to only sell headphone amps. Gutty, had a crack at one in the UK, and they won't ship to Oz. Oh well, just have to wait for the next one to pop up and try again.
Jeffie1503561482 Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 He may be talking about a dacmagic, since thats the original topic??

The first one i bid on is still for sale, the guy says he'll send it this way for 600 pound, but you organise and pay the shipping.(about another 100 pound) But, and this is the reason our deal fell through, he has issues with paypal, and ultimately wanted me to pay via a western union/moneygram type thing. I have no reason to not trust the guy, he refunded my money no issue. Just that paypal wanted his bank details and he didn't want to give them up, so they wouldn't clear the money to him. Something to do with Euro law stating after recieving a certain amout via paypal you have to give up your bank details. Anyway, his is brand new and still for sale but as is, deal would be done outside of ebay and paypal. If you like i can ask him to relist it, or if you want his email, phone number etc i can give them to you. I personally would only be going with his if a: you know someone in Bristol, England that can buy it for you and send it this way. Or b: get him to sort his **** out and buy it via ebay/paypal. That way you're covered if it goes pear shaped.

That was global priority express (5day) with insurance. UK shipping is so expensive

The one i ended up buying cost me 110 pound door to door, no other fees, taxes... nothing.
