ministry Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 For that price you couldn't go past the richter krakatoa. http://www.lenwallisaudio.com/products/details.php?pid=641 Can be had for $400.
Andre281503560612 Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 Where are you mate? Im selling off an Aslan CW12 for a tad over your budget if your in Sydney (RRP is $895). Might be a bit too big though. That said, i think the Krakatoa would be a good sub for around that money.
Mitcon1503562253 Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 (edited) Hi all,im after a sub to go with my Yamaha V663 reciever and Wharfedale Diamond 9.1's. my budget is around $400-500. it will be going in my bedroom which is reasonably small so i wont need a very powerful sub. it will be used for both movies and music split pretty much 50 50. any help will be appreciated thanks At that price I'd go for the Wharfedale SW150, of a Ritcher Krakatoa or for $100 more a Richter Thor or look at DIY if your handy. If it's only going to ever be a bedroom or small room though the Thor may be a little overkill. I'm sure some others will chirp in with other options but even quality small subs can be costly, though I'm pretty sure either the Wharfedale SW150 or Ritcher Krakatoa will be ok and suit the speakers that you are using now. Edit: you two folks above me beat me to it lol. Edited November 3, 2008 by Mitcon
danny300011503562131 Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 thanks for the suggestions, do you know where to get the Ritcher Krakatoa or the SW150 in Perth or online? thanks
Mitcon1503562253 Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 thanks for the suggestions, do you know where to get the Ritcher Krakatoa or the SW150 in Perth or online?thanks The Richter I've often seen on ebay for about $400 for the Krakatoa, the Thor is normally $600 and the Precious metals thor version is often cheaper. As to stores I don't know which offhand in Perth. Someone will know. The SW150 can be had many places, I think JB HiFi normally have it in the ads for under $400.
Brendon Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 thanks for the suggestions, do you know where to get the Ritcher Krakatoa or the SW150 in Perth or online?thanks Hi Danny, Sound advice has them in their subwoofer listing on their website. Showing price as $699 though. http://www.soundadvice.net.au/Subwoofers.htm Brendon
Juicester Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 second vote for wharfedale sw150. jb hifi should sell them. great for the money.
Mitcon1503562253 Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 second vote for wharfedale sw150. jb hifi should sell them. great for the money. I'm pretty sure from memory they normally advertise them at $377. I wouldn't say they are awesome for movies (but for a bedroom, lol more than enough) but they are quite decent for music. Again I'm going from memory but didn't this sub win an award or something in music use, I'm pretty sure some mags have in their reviews unless I'm confusing this sub. lol my memory isn't always the greatest these days, someone will chime in that knows or remembers.
dfferent Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 Are you any good at DIY? I just finished building 2 subs with a jaycar amp $200 (each), jaycar 10" $150(each). 1" MDF cut to size $45(both). Took about an hour to put each one together, glued and screwed, haven't painted em yet, but they work fantastic. As a test i made one ported and one sealed.
rocky500 Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 I have a mate who might be selling a wharfedale sw250 in exel cond he is in WA. It is Dark Rosewood in colour I think. If your interested I can check. It also has a remote to control the Sub.
danny300011503562131 Posted November 8, 2008 Author Posted November 8, 2008 thanks for the offer but i think i will stick with the sw150, im going to pick it up this arvo
danny300011503562131 Posted November 8, 2008 Author Posted November 8, 2008 i just picked up the sub, im having trouble setting it up. whe i go into the speaker set menu on my AVR i can set the BASS OUT to Subwoofer, Speakers or Both. When i select the Subwoofer option noting comes out of the sub, but when i select BOTH the sub works. i dont think this setting is optimal because it will be sending the bass to the sub and the speakers. thanks
Andre281503560612 Posted November 8, 2008 Posted November 8, 2008 i use both, i think thats what your meant to use.

If you have the mains set to large, then only LFE (the .1) will be sent to the sub. If you set the mains to small then all frequency below the crossover point will be sent to the sub. Generally speaking, the best results are obtained from setting the mains to small, this lets sub do what it does and leaves the AVR to power a smaller range and reduces the load on the mains. Experiment and see what sounds best to you.
Juicester Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 sometimes there is a switch on the sub to turn on or off a sub crossover!? perhaps thats the problem....
Jeffie1503561482 Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 using the 'both' setting sends bass that is supposed to go the the fronts only (when speakers are set to large) to the fronts AND the sub. What avr are you using? it looks like (by those descriptions) that the subwoofer setting sets them to small, speaker sets them to large.
danny300011503562131 Posted November 12, 2008 Author Posted November 12, 2008 thanks guys got it sorted, just set the fronts to small and its working perfect. thanks for all the advice fella's
Guest Midz Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 (edited) And the important question, how is it? It it true what they say, you don't know what your missing until you actually have the sub and go wow! Edited November 12, 2008 by Midz
danny300011503562131 Posted November 13, 2008 Author Posted November 13, 2008 It is awswome , havent watched any movies yet but listening to music sounds way better. For a small room this sub is perfect. Recommended.
