Hello,

Can anyone tell me if the Pioneer Bdp-51fd in multizoned for DVD? Or if not, is it as simple as entering a code?

I'm not concerned about blu-ray being multizoned, but I have a number of DVDs from all over the place.

Also, could anyone comment on how it stacks up against the Sony BDP-S550 or Panasonic DMP-BD80?

I would like the 7.1 audio outs as well - hence these models.

I'm not bothered about BonusView...

Cheers,

Chris

I have a 51 and can tell you its a great machine. Very good PQ and colour reproduction, stable picture and yes its multizoned out of the box for DVD...or at least mine was. If it isnt it will be once you update the firmware to 1.25a.

Cant tell you how it stacks up against the 550 or the 80 but of all the BD players I've owned [sammy 1000, PS3, Pana BD10a] i feel it gives me the best PQ. Its a little slow on on boot times though.

Cant comment on the analogue connections as I bitstream to my AVR via HDMI...but my 7.1 rocks.

You might find what you're looking for in this thread http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=59968

I did an in-store side-by-side comparison between a 51fd and s550 - I picked the 51fd. Can't comment on the BD80.

The 51FD is also a fantastic cd player. I did an A/B comparison last nite, the 51fd stacks up really well against a Nad 542 (rrp $700).

Yes it is region free for SD DVD's and NO there is not a blu-ray region free mod for it yet.

Great performance for both PQ and AQ.

I have 2 ch analog connected and HDMI. Use 2 ch sometimes for CD playback!

Thanks for the replies - I think I'll pick this one!!

One final question - is $600 a reasonable price for a new one?

Yep, that is a real good price as RRP a few months back was $799.

Great that CD audio is good, shame about the upscaling - bugger!

Would the upscaling outperform a Oppo Dv971 (upscales to 720p/1080i)?

The blu-ray player would be replacing the Oppo so the upscaling needs to be as good as the Oppo...

My PJ is 720p.

Are there any other blu-ray players I should be looking at?

Many US users have commented it is only good as an upscaler to a 1080 screen / pj, not good for 720p projectors

Because 720p is not even an output option which is crazy there are still plenty of 1368x768 displays/pj around

cheers laurie
