hergs Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 (edited) G'day all, I'm thinking about buying a 40" LCD soon and wanted to get some knowledgeable advice before embarking. Basically, I've got $1600 to $1800 to spend and would want the following features: * At least one HDMI port * Full 1080p if possible (have an Xbox 360 and am thinking about buying a blu ray player also) * No intelligent contrast control like some of Viera models (where they auto 'correct' the blacks!) * 100hz - the tv's I've seen with 100hz seem to make a noticeable difference with motion blur * HD tuner of course So am I in the market, or is the above wishful thinking for my price range? Thank you all, appreciate the help Cheers Edited November 2, 2008 by hergs
kulfi Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 Have a look at this - http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?s=&...t&p=1194876 Enough said.
Owen Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 (edited) * At least one HDMI port All TV’s these days have at least 1 HDMI port. * Full 1080p if possible (have an Xbox 360 and am thinking about buying a blu ray player also) The TV does not need to be the same resolution as the source.Your eyes are the limiting factor in what detail you can see on a TV of given size at a particular viewing distance, so in most cases it does not matter if the TV is 768 or 1080 no matter what the video source. If your viewing distance is 2.5 meters plus you will see more detail on a 50” 768 display then a 40” 1080 display. At the same distance a 40” 1080 and 42” 768 display will both have the same visible detail because your eyes are the limitation. * No intelligent contrast control like some of Viera models (where they auto 'correct' the blacks!) If such a feature is provided it can always be turned off. * 100hz - the tv's I've seen with 100hz seem to make a noticeable difference with motion blur 100Hz is pretty much standard these days, but for Plasma it makes little diferance. * HD tuner of course Generally a given in current sets. aeon1503559541 Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 $1600 to $1800 probably limits your choices for 1080p 40" displays... Interestingly enough though, that pretty much matches the criteria we had looking for TVs the other day as well... In the end we bought this one: LG 42LG50FD - they were $1791 at JBHifi in the last catalogue. Works quite well, up close the image looks pretty horrible, but a few metres back it looks quite nice. Another option is this one: Samsung LA40A550 Which I've seen online for $1739 + post. I'd be inclined to get the Samsung over the LG, though I haven't actually seen the Samsung...
