Decided to throw a Region 1 DVD into my Ps3 on the weekend to see if it would play, and it played it perfectly!

Sony would have been the last company on earth I would have thought that would make their system region free !

It is an Aus retail PS3. The DVD I was watching was definitely a US DVD, which according to amazon (where I got it) it's region 1. I am at work, so can't look at the box.

I have various other region 1 DVD's which I will have to throw in there as well to test this out - now I am curious! :D

I have the same box set and mine is Region-1 only, as one of my PCs would not read it - and the drive is set to Region 4 only.

I will try tonight and see if my PS3 can read it. And to be honest I have never even bothered trying a non-Region 4 disc in the PS3, as just about all my DVD players are region free, and take care of playback duties.

My PS3 is an Aussie one and plays all region 4 and region 0 dvd's, obviously. But has also played about 50% of the region 2 discs I've chucked at it (which may actually be region 2 & 4 encodes, which is a common practice as the Aus and UK markets are almost the same). It's never played a region 1 or region 3 disc though.

now that is really surprising

I have numerous other region 1 DVD's that do not play. i have never gotten any regio n1 discs to work. i have an AUS 40gb PS3.

the only thing i can think of is that your Bulls DVD is region 0 or you have a new 80gb ps3 which may be region free for DVD's? (doubtful)

edit: I just tested my Ultimate Jordan 20th anniversary DVD in there (labelled region 1) and it works!

looks like NBA entertainment do not region lock their DVD's

I don't know why Sony even bothered to region lock the dvd side of PS3, as my standalone Sony dvd player out of the box was region free :huh: but maybe it is combined region coding with the BR side of things?

I will have to try a few now and see if they work.

p.s. using a Aus 40gb PS3

Yeah, your right. I tested both of my Lakers, and Bulls NBA series DVD's in the PS3 and it plays them fine, but I threw in the Ultimate Jordan box set, and boom - wrong region! (doesnt he have enough money! hehe). I got the Jordan one when it first came out (from the US), so maybe they relaxed the region coding later on.

Bugger - looks like I can't throw my multi-region DVD player out just yet. I wonder if there are some remote codes to unlock the region like most other DVD players. that would be sweet. Seems strange that you can buy region free games for the PS3, but it enforces region coding for DVD playback!

Damn it! I was getting all excited for a minute there that I would be able to lose my somewhat ordinary upscaling DVD player in lieu of the PS3, but as i have the release edition of this same 'Ultimate Jordan' box-set, it is looking like I might need to hang onto it for just a little while longer. That reminds me - haven't watch it in aaaaages... time for some 'Come Fly with Me' action methinks!

Cheers,

Doc.

yeah i was surprised it works coz i swear the jordan collection was region locked, but then

i remembered i sold the first release (2 disc) and bought the 20th anniversary release (3 disc with 5 bonus full games)

only found out now that the 20th anniversary edition is not locked.

In the PS3, maybe. But the same remote hack that makes standard Sony DVD players and recorders multi-region works on the BDPS350 for standard-def discs, while leaving Blu-ray regions locked down.

I have just bought a new 80GB PS3 and the region is limited to 4.

That really upsets me for all the above reasons. i.e.:

- Any 'normal' DVD player is region free, even from Sony

- I hoped to use the PS3 to replace my previous DVD-only player

- Why should Sony predjudice against the 'Games' machine?

NB the shop thought that it was region free for SD but not for HD (Blu-Ray).

To carry the argument into today, I thought that the business reasons behind regionalising were:

- to stop people importing DVDs of movies that were still in the cinemas here

- to stop grey marketing of DVD titles that were not available here

These reasons are negated by:

- In the first case, these days movies tend to be simultaneuos releases world wide

- if titles were available here at the right price, no one would need to import

About time Sony sent out the patch to unregionalise all DVD formats!
