Blackman1503561291 Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 I just got my copy of Top Gun the other day and I noticed its audio besides Dolby True HD it has DTS MASTER AUDIO in 6.1. Now testing the movie I'm looking at the front of the Onkyo 875 display and it shows the 5.1 boxes highlighted but with a SB in between the Surr, Rear R and the Surr, rear L. Does anyone know what the SB is? Also when playing a 6.1 movie like this do you need to change anything "EG" (Panasonic has settings to change from 7.1 to 6.1) Also I think the Onkyo is the same, what do you think?
The D-Train Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Surround Back? Just a guess but that would be mine.
way_fast_whitie Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Surround Back? Just a guess but that would be mine. think ya right, middle surround
Shonky* Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 SB is surround back. That's the 6th channel and the difference between 5.1 and 6.1
Topdog Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 (edited) SB is Surround Back but if the speakers aren't connected then there should b a menu item in your amp setup to set them at "Off"..At least that's what I need to do on my Sony 5300.. Edited October 25, 2008 by Topdog

That's right! Ice... man. I am dangerous. This gives me a hard on. Don't tease me. You can be my wingman any time. Bullshit! You can be mine. hope I didn't turn you off your purchase ???

Yes I have the 7 speakers connected, so there is no changes needed in the BD 30 or the Onkyo to run 6.1?
gavstar1 Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 (edited) Yes I have the 7 speakers connected, so there is no changes needed in the BD 30 or the Onkyo to run 6.1? The Onkyo front display will highlight the boxes for each speaker you have connected, regardless of whether the soundtrack uses the channels. When the channel isn't used in a particular DVD/Blu ray film, the front display will just show an empty square. In the case of Topgun's DTS HD MSTR 6.1 track, the onkyo correctly highlights the speakers you have wired up and will fill the boxes with the lettering for each 'active' channel. With topgun, it should display FL C FR SL SR SW SB. If the movie had a 7.1 HD MSTR track (eg Semi-pro), all the display will show FL C FR SL SR SW SBR SBL. In the the onkyo's speaker set up menu, just make sure depending on whether you have 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 that the speakers are selected correctly (although the Audessy MultEq XT should have auto detected this already when you ran it for the first time). Topdog Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Gavstar1 seems to have covered it pretty well..

Thankyooooooooou very much On the Onkyo the surround rear boxes are empty on 6.1 but between them there is SB. (when i watched 3.10 to yuma being 7.1 PCM all boxes are filled in correctly) When I ran the Audessy it found all 7 speakers+ the sub

Is that preferable to a straight gay movie?
tonyjg Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 (edited) Is that preferable to a straight gay movie? what .. like Brokeback Mountain ?? what was it about 1986 and Top Gun ?? what were we on ?? what got us into the cinemas to see this film ?? what were we THINKING ??!!!!!!! ( *** this is REALLY a question for forum guys who were OLD enough to experience the cinema release - yes some 22 YEARS ago !!!. ) When you try (not to) think about it - what does TOP GUN actually have as a film ?? It's not an action film - there's no really action scenes, just a few planes flying, somewhere, chasing each others tails, and take off and landing. There really is no plot. It's terribly cliched. Was it simply that we got caught up in a 'soundtrack' ?? "Take My Breathe Away". Ecck - those Kenny Loggins songs errrrrrrrrr.. shivers in spine. I find it hard to watch it these days (and not in a Brokeback sort of way either). edit - have a read of this http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092099/board/flat/94330578?p=1 Edited October 27, 2008 by tonyjg
