MLB Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Hi guys - apologies if this request has been done to death in other threads. I am currently enjoying the MLB playoffs in (mostly) HD. The World Series - starting on Thursday - will also be televised in HD via the Fox network. The only problem with HD is the amount of space it requires on the IQ2 hard drive. There are 2 games from the NLCS that I would like to keep, and I'm sure there will be a number of WS games I will also not want to permanently delete. My family, however, are not in agreement and would dearly love to press the yellow button on all of my stored baseball games (I have the removal password protected, lol. Well, until my wife decides otherwise, that is!) Anyway, I have heard it is relatively easy to set up a DVD burner with Hard Drive to copy down stored IQ2 shows. I have no need for a tuner, just a dumb hard drive capable of receiving data from my IQ2. My questions are: 1. Is there a relatively cheap solution out there capable of accepting data from my IQ2? 2. Is the HD content retained as HD - ie is the PQ as good when played from the DVD HD? 3. Is the HD content easily burnt to a DVD disc? And again, is the PQ retained when written to DVD disc? I would welcome any suggestions regarding DVD make and model, along with the easiest way to configure the two boxes. Thanks in advance.
digitalj Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 copying to a DVD will result in SD Quality, also copying to the HDD in a DVD Recorder will also be SD Quality as the only inputs are SD.
Shonky* Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Unfortunately the only way to get data out of an IQ is via it's playback outputs. i.e you'll have to set it up to play back a show in real time and record it to another device. The best quality input most recorders have is on SVideo which is not high definition. If you're lucky you might find something that can take component in. DVDs can not store/play high definition anyway so it doesn't really matter (well they can but a special player is required and they're only capable of something like 30 minutes of recording) There's not a whole lot more you can do than that.

I have set up a samsung dvd recorder (DVD-R155) to record off my IQ2. I use the S video output from the IQ and have found the results to be DVd quality which for me is fine. As you say there is a limited amount of space on the hard drive so a DVD is a cheap option (good quality discs 50 cents) I use it to free up my IQ hard drive and pass on some plane / boat / war documentries to the 92 year old grandfather. The DVD recorder was purchased from target, last one on the shelf (obsolete model) no box, no remote but I got it for $86.00 about 3 weeks ago. I use the harmony remote to contol the DVD so I wasn't worried about the no box/ remote issue and saved about $170.00 off the ticket price. and registered the warranty online It has 3 sets of inputs so I leave the fox plugged in the rear and have front panel access for a digital vido camera or vcr. Output to the LCD panel is 1080I (upscaled) via HDMI socket. recording quality is selectable from 1 hr (high quality) to 6(?) hrs low quality DOWNSIDES - it is not high def but as I said the quality is adequate - real time recording IE if it is a 3 hour program it takes 3 hrs to record ( I usually set it going at night and go to bed!!) Well, there's my 2 cents worth, a cheap option that works, has some drawbacks but frees up the IQ hard drive. Maybe you could record the wifes / kids programs to DVD and keep all your stuff on the IQ?? The SQUID
