malleesurfer Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I recently bought a Strong SRT 5405 to replace a TEAC SD STB which died. The tv is a TEAC EU 3216 STF (widescreen CRT with SCART only) & connected them with a CREST SVHS & 2 RCA to SCART AV cable. All seemed smooth but the display is only black & white. The TV is ok as tested with the antenna directly hooked into the RF input on the TV, also DVD into the 2nd SCART connection. Any ideas ???
I am not a duck Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 but the display is only black & white. For the Strong, check "AV setting" (page 25 of Strong manual) & check "Video output" is "YC" instead of default "YPbPr". For the TV, when in AV mode, check "COLOUR SYSTEM" is "AUTO" (paragraph 4 page 15 of TEAC owner's manual) I can't recall exactly because it is not clear from my notes, but I think SCART 1 is different to SCART 2 in terms of functionality. SCART 2 may be YCbCr only, I assume that is how your DVD is connected. Pressing the "AV" button on the remote switches between SCART 1 Y/C, SCART 1 RGB, SCART 2 YCbCr and FRONT AV in that sequence. Pressing "TV" or one of the "P/CH +/-" remote buttons returns to tuner mode on the TV. I guess you know how to do that anyway . Marc.
malleesurfer Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Thanks Marc, I checked my settings & all were as you suggested. I've e-mailed STRONG to ask if they're aware of this problem & also it seems my SW ver is different to their latest ver on their download site (mine is 1.0/2008.12.25 & theirs is 1.0/28.11.2008 - i assume this is the release date but don't expect it to be my problem as I've not seen my issue in this forum before) cheers
I am not a duck Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 malleesurfer, How was the TEAC STB connected to the TV? You could try connecting CVBS output of the Strong to the front (side) AV input of the TEAC and see you get colour on that input. Marc.
malleesurfer Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 the TEAC STB & TEAC TV were SCART-SCART. I tried your suggestion,CVBS-F-AV, & all worked (the TV video RCA input is a bit dicky & may need attention as I believe the kids used this often with a Nintendo). This'll get things going but as cables are temp placed I will delve into my orig problem next week, being the S-Video (Y/C) from the STB to the TV SCART cheers
I am not a duck Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 (edited) I'm taking a real long shot now. Downloaded the manual for your TV, and it doesn't explicitly say that SCART 1 will accept composite or S video, although can't see why it shouldn't. It does mention RGB, and if you had a wire for wire connected SCART cable, this would have provided RGB from the TEAC set top box. It could also be that your Crest cable is set up as an output connection, instead of input, so effectively Y/C/audio signals are being fed from the output of the Strong to equivalent SCART outputs on the TV, rather than inputs. By this I mean that the Crest adapter would normally be used to feed signals from a receiving device to a display device, one way only. (SCART is bidirectional, using different pins for inputs & outputs. While not all SCART connected devices accept S-video, I'm assuming when the TV is on SCART 1 Y/C, it is being told to accept this ) EDIT: removed my stupidity. Edited February 21, 2009 by M'bozo
malleesurfer Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 I'm unsure if the CREST lead is bi-directional & will need to find out. Their website no longer displays this cable. I've changed the setup created earlier to eradicate the "exposed" composite cable from STB to TV by the following. 1. STB to DVD recorder using S/Video & 2 x Audio jacks either end. 2. DVD recorder to TV using cable Component to SCART which connects into SCART 2. The downside of this is the DVD needs to be on to pass the signal from STB to TV but until I can get a colour signal into SCART 1 on the TV, this setup will have to do.
malleesurfer Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 the CREST packaging states S/VHS & 2 X RCA to SCART so this seems ok & the TV SCART was always an input. Looking at pinout diagrams now
