Peter D Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 I just got a free BD-P1500 with a $1250 32" Samsung series 5 LCD. The manual says that it plays regins A, B and C Blu-Ray and 3, 4 and 5 DVD. I found out how to get region free for DVD and that works. But I am confused about whether it is region free for Blu-Ray. The manual says that it is region free, but I see lots of people saying that it is Region B only. Is it region free?

migrane Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 (edited) Especially with prices such as this: Domayne at Warrawong are selling them for $297 this weekend. BTW Is there any way to convert these Region B players to Region A? It would be nice to have a Region A player - at this price. Edited October 18, 2008 by migrane
Peter D Posted October 18, 2008 Author Posted October 18, 2008 Then why does the manual and the quick set up guide specifically say that it can play regions A, B, C, 3, 4, 5?
momaw Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Then why does the manual and the quick set up guide specifically say that it can play regions A, B, C, 3, 4, 5? There is an ABC logo that specifically means the disc will work in all regions. I'm assuming it means it must have this logo for the disc to play i.e. a disc with only the Region A logo will not work.
mfedley Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 That's true, but it is programmed to only play Region B + Region 4 DVD's. If you purchased the BD1500 in the US, it would play Region A and Region 1 DVD's. I can confirm it does not play Region A as I have already tested when I was having trouble with one of my Region A disks (stated incorrect region) There is an ABC logo that specifically means the disc will work in all regions. I'm assuming it means it must have this logo for the disc to play i.e. a disc with only the Region A logo will not work.
momaw Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 I just downloaded the manual off the Samsung Australia site and it is very poorly written. But it does say on page 11 that if the region code on the back of the player does not match the region code of the disc, it will not play. It's like they just wanted to print one manual for all regions and in the end it is just a mess. Doesn't give one confidence for the product.
Peter D Posted October 18, 2008 Author Posted October 18, 2008 On the bottom of page 10, it says that it plays A, B and C.
ELK007 Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 On the bottom of page 10, it says that it plays A, B and C. It's wrong! Trust me it doesn't play all regions!
momaw Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 On the bottom of page 10, it says that it plays A, B and C. And it lists the countries that it will accept discs from in those regions and the US is not in that list. I'm sorry, but the manual, while poorly written, does not say it will play discs from Region A North America. As I said, page is 11 is quite specific. It will only play discs from the region marked on the back of the player itself.
mfedley Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Peter, my Parents have the BD 1500. I just re-checked it. It plays Region B disks (Region A is spat out saying Incorrect Region). Region 4 plays but Region 1 DVD's say incorrect region. No need to look at the manual. IT DOES NOT AND WILL NOT WORK ON REGION A,C, 1, 2, 3 or 5.
tonymy01 Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 However there is a code to make it DVD region free (just not BD region free).
Guest jeffpr Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 what would happen if you loaded us firmware onto it? who wants to take a chance?
mfedley Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Have already tried and wont work. what would happen if you loaded us firmware onto it? who wants to take a chance?
tonymy01 Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 It has already been well and truley discussed in another bd1500 thread. The Aussie unit rejects the US f/w. I renamed the US f/w, and hacked the binary to have XSA rather than XAA in the header of the binary, and the player still rejects it.
philemon Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Hello from the New South Africa - Region 2 I just got a BD-P1500 and also some Blue Ray discs. I cannot find a region number on the blue Ray discs and all is well - so far - BUT a normal dvd disc from amazon with a region 1 does not play. Any advice will be appreciated. Search on the net and there is 1 person who says that he has changed the code but I am not having any luck. Thanxs Philemon

Just read through all the postings in the link above and you will get the idea. This is for DVD only, not BD.
tonymy01 Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 From that thread, this post: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?s=&...t&p=1142170 for Region 2 use 3, 8, 7, 6 and 7

I thought it was via redempion from Samsung ot given in store?
Peter D Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 I got a free player from the store. JB ran an ad in the Herald Sun on Friday offering a free player with all Full HD players. In their catalogue, they also advertised the 32" Series 5 Samsung for $1296 (which was equal to the best price I could get anywhere). So I took a copy of the ads with me to JB. They informed me that the free player only came with 40" and above. Nowhere did the ad say that. They called head office. They agreed with me and I got a free BD player. Because the mistake was made by JB and not Samsung, JB had to wear the cost of the player. So I got one on the spot without having to go through the redemption process and also saved the $30 delivery fee. So a 32" Full HD LCD plus a BD-P1500 player for a total of $1296. Incidentally, the ad on their web site has now been modified to say "on these Full HD players" rather than "on all Full HD players".
fossicker Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 I got a free player from the store. Nice going.
