BigBadBaz Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 Sent this email to SBS today........ "Hi, Is it possible to have a 7 (or even 3) day program guide from SBS Digital TV. Every other broadcaster in my area (ABC and 3 commercial broadcasters) have at least a 3 day guide. SBS has only "Now and Next" which is pretty poor in comparison. Regards," And got this reply............. "Thank-You for your enquiry - I have been informed that SBS will introduce an Electronic Programme Guide in the first half of next year. I must apologise for not being able to provide you with a more specific answer but if you could forward me a Telephone Number I will contact you when I have additional information which I can relay to you. Regards Alan Transmissions Dept. Tel : 1800 500 727" Sounds promising
digitalj Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 maybe they're hoping for extra funding from the government next year?
Neon Kitten Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 I won't hold my breath. They'd previously said they'd have one by December.
BigBadBaz Posted December 2, 2008 Author Posted December 2, 2008 I won't hold my breath. They'd previously said they'd have one by December. SBS now has a proper EPG (only goes out about 2 1/2 days though) in leiu of the old Now and Next. Only on the main channel. I'm in Tas. may be different in other areas.

To me that sounds like something to do more with the planned Freeview EPG, which is supposed to be coming in March 2009. But I may be wrong. Regards, mattk
blip Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Here in Orange, NSW there is data until 15:30 tomorrow.
jakes Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 (edited) Here in Orange, NSW there is data until 15:30 tomorrow. Had to go check. still only n/n in sydney. How is Orange getting 24 hrs? Seems very odd. (not suggesting that what you're saying is odd, blip, just that the situation is strange) edit: fixed punctuation. Edited December 4, 2008 by jakes
fredofrog Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 (edited) Deleted my SBS channels from the BW PVR and rescanned them in and presto EPG for at least 1 full day and parts of other days The TV picked up the "new" expanded EPG without rescan etc Well done SBS management Edited December 4, 2008 by fredofrog
Boh Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Hey fredofrog, I just read your post, so I tried a partial scan of SBS only without deleting first on my bwiz, and now have a guide up to Midnight : Wednesday 10th December. Broadcast from Mt Danenong Melbourne

Alista Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 so do i world news channel never says whats on it's really annoying
fredofrog Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 so do i world news channel never says whats on it's really annoying unless you have Foxtel in which case the EPG for all available SBS services on paytv is fully shown (I stopped asking why)

Just switched to SBS, let the EPG load, and right there is a full EPG up until 2.30am Thursday 11th December. Welcome to the ranks of the REAL broadcasters, SBS! I've already found two shows I didn't know were on that I've flagged for recording. The fact that they got this happening AFTER the Freeview announcement gives me some hope that we won't lose EIT EPGs after all once the "copyright" one kicks in.
prl Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 ...The fact that they got this happening AFTER the Freeview announcement gives me some hope that we won't lose EIT EPGs after all once the "copyright" one kicks in. The public broadcasters may behave differently from the commercials after Freeview goes live. The EPG is copyright anyway, Freeview or not. Why's it called "Free"view anyway? We pay for it whether we watch it or not, either through our taxes, or the price of our Weeties.
Neon Kitten Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 The EPG is copyright anyway, Freeview or not. Semantics (and no doubt something that would be overturned in court were Nine to take on a major corporation with deep lawyer-hiring pockets). They can claim "copyright" all they like, but I will never accept that a listing of what's on TV is "intellectual property". But I digress.

Guest SBS Broadcast Engineering Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 SBS Broadcast Engineering is undergoing a full technical rebuild of its Play Out and Presentation facilities over the coming months. Stage 1 works that encompassed a new Head End compression system that can efficiently multiplex the required bandwidth for 720p50 on our HD channel is now available to all markets with the exception of Darwin which will follow in the coming weeks due to transmission site issues. As part of these works, a new SI service is also available that has a 7 day EPG, however the current SBS Presentation automation system scheduled to be updated in Stage 3 has limited capacity as to the available amount of data to pass onto this. Stage 2 works scheduled for early 2009 will involve transport stream changes in the ASI stream as more locations are added to our satellite distribution to allow SBS to address issues at various transmission sites. A large proportion of viewers will be required to retune their decoders to receive SBS services. An appropriate marketing campaign will advise viewers of this date. Stage 3 works will see the replacement of the entire media chain and automation system to allow native HD content to pass from ingest through to the viewer. These works are in progress and will start to become available shortly after Stage 2. SBS apologises for any inconvenience caused to our television viewers and radio listeners during these works. So in other words, don't get used to the 7-day EPG, since we're going to take it away again just in time to force you to buy a Freeview box to get one? Whatever "limited capacity as to the available amount of data" means, surely if you're upgrading equipment you'd purchase the sort of modern gear used in networks around the world that has no problem with something as bog-standard and simple as a 7-day EIT EPG?

I think what is meant is that the final delivery "SI" system can handle seven days but the current system that feeds the data to it can only provide somewhat less than that. Quite a different thing to your assumption. This system was referred to as the Presentation Automation System which sounds to me like it's the system that actually runs SBS. I can't think of a better place to get an accurate EPG from. Equally interesting is that SBS HD is now 720p Edited December 6, 2008 by j s

I didn't think that anyone was disputing the copyright of the Nine EPG as a whole. IceTV certainly thinks that their EPG is protected by copyright. My understanding is that IceTV maintains that their use of some of the Nine "Time & Title" is not a breach of Nine's admitted copyright on the EPG.
mortenharketrocks Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Is there anyone is Brisbane who is getting the EPG from SBS??? Thanks
