A tossup between this lg 42lg61yd , the specs look pretty good on paper ( + as a bonus you get a 26" lcd with hd tuna via redemption for free) or a samsung la40a650. It will mainly be used for watching blu rays, hd dvd's and a bit of iq2, would like some opinions please as i'm no expert, cheers peter.

There really is no comparison, Samsung over LG, regardless of what LG throw in.

A lot of people give LG a bad reputation just like those who like to bash Bose, all i can say is try both before you buy as displays never look the same at home. i went through 3 Samsungs series 5 within 1 month and gone back to LG for service and quality.

I don't mind LG all that much. I have an old LG 68cm CRT and it's going strong.

However, after last year's tuner freeze disasters and some bad quality reports, their standing has come down.

Check out this deal if you want LG -

http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/7113

LG 42" HD LCD TV with Nintendo Wii and LG 26" LCD TV only $2,399 (save $1,400)

Basically, it's your deal plus a Nintendo Wii.

I just bought a 47LG60FD after months of looking at plasmas & LCDs. As I couldn't afford the Sony I wanted I checked out all brands before settling on LG & I do get the extra 26" LCD as well). In the end if the picture quality is good & the price is right then buy what you want.

Good advice, except that no stores allow you to try before you buy (at home) so it all comes down to reputation.

Why did you leave LG in the first place if their service and quality was so good?

This thread is why I would never buy an LG product ever: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=125

Sure it is for a rear-pro, but the disgraceful treatment that many of the people trying to sort out this issue got from LG Australia service was appalling. Unfortunately some of the very good posts on how these people were treated behind the scenes (email/telephone correspondance) had to be removed, demanded by LG legal, but the thread still has some very good information about people's horror stories.

got a problem with backlight bleed on my 42lg61yd, made a couple of complaints to lg who will now give me a new tv via store redemption... all the people at lg were polite ( although a couple of emails went unanswered!!) and my problem is now resolved.... i hope!!!!!!, i will give a new LG tv a go even though i could have my money back.... for a full HD tv with a 100hz and for the price i really dont think i can can get a better tv????

Emails and leters dont work, you really got to talk to people.

Agree, but if you read all that LG thread (will take a few days), you will see that people were speaking to LG until they were blue in the face. People were getting lied to as well. And when people started to get legal representation as they were getting nowhere with LG and getting frustrating lack of response after false promises, the legal people were finding similar communication problems!

The name Riannon (sp) came up a lot, she was the CSR rep at the time that was apparently quite polite when doing the initial dealings with the issue, but was like the "middle man buffer", if your query got to her it didn't get anywhere else and rarely got acted upon.

Don't say I didn't warn you...

LG has some good looking products, but I don't think I would touch them with a 10 foot barge pole after reading that whole thread. People lost many thousands of dollars because of that lemon.

Trust me, in relation to the rear projection tv issues, samsung had the SAME problems, getting repairs etc. Both brands share some LG supplied components ( which subsequently failed) and due to the high number of failures, I believe a legal battle may have existed between samsung and LG over who was responsible for the repairs etc. The fact remains the LG model was more popular than the samsung unit so we hear about the LG failures more actively.

Back to the OP's post, I would aim for a LG lcd, their latest carnation is not to bad. I have ( and continue) to re-pack and return many new samsung LCD's weekly due to a on-going high failure rate. In fact, yet another today is on it's way back for a credit!

What model (or models) are these high failure rates on? I'm seriously looking at purchasing a Samsung, so any info would be welcome.

Still wouldn't buy an lg though! :winky:

Ok, thanks for all the comments, i went with the lg, great picture quality. I chucked on a blu ray to compare the picture with my old tv and OH MY GOD what a difference, and as a bonus even the wife said how clear and crisp the picture was. So all in all very happy with the lg, cheers peter. :D

Have a 3yo LG 37 incher and it's been a perfect little gem with a PQ that makes some plasma owners who see it rather disgruntled!! However the STB that came with it has locked up at least once a week and has finally karked it, although the TV soldiers on like brand new.

Currently looking to upgrade to a 42 incher and would go LG again but a little concerned about the tuna issues, as they are all internal tuners nowadays, and hopefully they have sorted it.
