myrantz Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 (edited) Anybody with a 3808 and a HTPC? After updating the firmware, for some reason my HTPC video is lost. Anybody have this problem, or hear/know anything about this? There's no way to go back to the last firmware, is there? It seems only 1920x1080 (50 or 60hz) is broken. 1280x720@50 is fine. Same results in both linux and windows. Only happens after the update. Any help? Edited October 11, 2008 by treblid
blairy Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 No you cannot rollback Sometimes the firmware upgrade clears out all your settings. Presumably you've checked these and all is OK? Power recycle using the small button? Microprocessor reset? Also look at the AVS thread on denon firmware upgrades AVS Denon Firmware Upgrade Thread Good luck
myrantz Posted October 11, 2008 Author Posted October 11, 2008 No you cannot rollbackSometimes the firmware upgrade clears out all your settings. Presumably you've checked these and all is OK? It didn't clear the settings. Everything works, just couldn't seem to get any PC 1920x1080 modes though.... Power recycle using the small button? Microprocessor reset? Done the small button.. How do I reset the microprocessor again? Might try to get another PC some time later and see if it's a video card problem. Also look at the AVS thread on denon firmware upgrades AVS Denon Firmware Upgrade Thread So much noise there. haha. sighz, will try that if all options failed..

Turn on power while holding standard and DSP simulation, release when the display starts flashing. Before you do it check your HDMI assignment hasn't been cleared in SETUP>SOURCE>ASSIGN Hakka.
myrantz Posted October 12, 2008 Author Posted October 12, 2008 Turn on power while holding standard and DSP simulation, release when the display starts flashing. interesting. That actually made matters worse. Used to be able to get text mode working, now it doesn't.. I think it's a HDCP bug/feature ... Whoever invented this crap deserve to be burnt in hell forever a trillion times over. Before you do it check your HDMI assignment hasn't been cleared in SETUP>SOURCE>ASSIGN HDMI assignment was working (I got console then blanks out when in 1920x1080 mode).. At least 1280x720@50 still works. Might as well go for broke? What's the key combo to reset everything?

You've already done the master/hard reset... http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=995566 BTW: Next time, if you have it connected to a LAN and can access the web interface, you can save all the settings before resetting them, making it easy to restore them if the reset didn't work. No go.. Seems new Denon firmware not happy with some PC resolutions.. Oh well, I'd try it with another PC when I have the time to see if it's a video card problem.
myrantz Posted October 15, 2008 Author Posted October 15, 2008 Bump.. Nobody with the updated firmware have any problems with computer 1080p resolutions? AVSForums is just so full of crud I can't even find my post, or know if there are any replies..

Nobody with the updated firmware have any problems with computer 1080p resolutions?AVSForums is just so full of crud I can't even find my post, or know if there are any replies.. got a question for you ...what motherboard you using...? and whats your screen type as well for eg (sony x series)..?
milkafromdtv Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Holy crap. Treblid, thus may not be much consolation to you, but you have my sincere thanks. I have a similar setup (3808 and HTPC running 1920x1080@60Hz via AMD 780G chipset), and was going to do a firmware update on the 3808 last night, but ended up passing out before I got around to it. Ain't no way in hell that LAN cable is going anywhere near my 3808 until this gets fixed! Good luck to you. milka
myrantz Posted October 15, 2008 Author Posted October 15, 2008 (edited) got a question for you ...what motherboard you using...? and whats your screen type as well for eg (sony x series)..? Motherboard is Asus P4E, Video card is 6600GT... I'm using a computer monitor (Viewsonic something, native res 1920x1200). So far: PC->Monitor @1080p50, works PC->Denon->Monitor @1080p50, nothing PC->Denon->Monitor @1080p60, nothing PC->Denon->Monitor @720p50 works Other stuffs like the Wii and DVD still work. Only PC vid passthru is broken.. No problems when I was using fw 1.69. Previously the monitor will say if it's HDMI PC (for PC res), or HDMI AV (for Wii and DVD)... When I set the card to output 1080p, it just says HDMI and blue screen.. and for 720p, the monitor will report HDMI PC. Holy crap.Treblid, thus may not be much consolation to you, but you have my sincere thanks. I'm sure it'd work for you (fingers crossed).. Even if it doesn't, you can always connect HTPC straight to your display bypassing teh amp. I'm just puzzled why it's broken (becoz for my next HTPC in the future, I want to use HDMI to feed video/audio direct into the amp). If it works, do tell me the video modeline you're using. blairy Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 In thye Menu>HDMI Information waht resolutions are supported by your monitor? Is the monitor HDCP compliabt...I know it worked previously but maybe it shouldn't have? Have you tried disconnecting the monitor or if possible resetting it? Have you tried an alternate cable? Good luck
Shonky* Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Have you tried talking to Denon? Was there anything in the firmware upgrade notes from AVS that might suggest a problem. The fact it works at 720p suggests to me it's not a HDCP problem. If HDCP was causing issues it should fall back to 576p or 480p I would have thought. I'll give a +1 for the cable (one of them) which would line up better with 720p working and 1080p not working. Have you tried using both cables direct between the PC and the LCD? Are you sure that nothing else changed apart from the firmware? You didn't upgrade video card drivers or anything like that?
myrantz Posted October 15, 2008 Author Posted October 15, 2008 (edited) In thye Menu>HDMI Information waht resolutions are supported by your monitor? I'd get back to you on that. I know i remember numbers like 480/576, 720 and 1080 and the letters i/p.. But can't remember the details... The info says 60hz, but 50hz was ok... Also, at the moment, input becomes "----". I can't remember what it was before, but I think it's RGB something something. Is the monitor HDCP compliabt...I know it worked previously but maybe it shouldn't have? It is. It's able to do Wii component to HDMI. Tried both modes ATH and ATH&HTH (I think that's what it's called). Video convert on or off makes no difference since it's a PC resolution (i.e. no overlay OSD). Have you tried disconnecting the monitor or if possible resetting it? Have you tried an alternate cable? Alternate cable... not yet... Have you tried talking to Denon? Not that desperate yet. I'm pretty sure it's a firmware issue though. Was there anything in the firmware upgrade notes from AVS that might suggest a problem. Not that I'm aware of.. The fact it works at 720p suggests to me it's not a HDCP problem. If HDCP was causing issues it should fall back to 576p or 480p I would have thought. For PC video, the Denon is supposed to pass it straight through without video processing. But really this HDCP crap is frustrating.. I'll give a +1 for the cable (one of them) which would line up better with 720p working and 1080p not working. Have you tried using both cables direct between the PC and the LCD? Will prob try that.. So tempted to just connect the HTPC straight to my monitor bypassing the amp. hahaha.. Are you sure that nothing else changed apart from the firmware? You didn't upgrade video card drivers or anything like that? Nah.. Nothing except the firmware update. Edit: Supported res: 480i/p 1080i:60Hz 720p:60Hz 1080p:60hz Edited October 15, 2008 by treblid
myrantz Posted October 15, 2008 Author Posted October 15, 2008 (edited) So 1080p 60Hz is working now? Nope.. 1080p@50 and 1080p@60 doesn't work.. I think that's from the EDID from my monitor. I give up for now. hahaha. Not that I have anything on the HTPC that has 1080p content, just means I no longer have a 1920x1080 desktop to play with... There's a new 63min update (which wasn't there 2-3 hrs ago).. maybe that will fix it? Edit: Nah... Still no 1080p modes.. Time to swap video cards.. Edited October 15, 2008 by treblid

I remember doing a firmware update about 4 weeks ago and all is ok with me. If I check for available updates on my 3808 tonight how would I tell if its the one that you suspect ? In fact before my last firmware update I had an annoying issue that meant I had to wait for my HTPC to atleast start booting up before I turned on my amp otherwise the HTPC would'nt boot up if I turned the amp on first (not sure if that made sense) But since the last update it now dos'nt matter and I'm very happy with it. have you tried the latest drivers for your graphics card ? Jack
myrantz Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 I also have a 3808 used with a HTPC. I suspect it's a video card issue, sending a 1080p video that the Denon is not happy with. Most likely you wouldn't see this problem I have after your upgrade. I remember doing a firmware update about 4 weeks ago and all is ok with me. It was ok for me all the while until 1.95. If I check for available updates on my 3808 tonight how would I tell if its the one that you suspect ? Last night they have this new firmware 1.97, which still broken. In fact before my last firmware update I had an annoying issue that meant I had to wait for my HTPC to atleast start booting up before I turned on my amp otherwise the HTPC would'nt boot up if I turned the amp on first (not sure if that made sense) I've read about that, EDID issue? It never happened to me though. But since the last update it now dos'nt matter and I'm very happy with it. If it aint broke, don't update it, I guess I only have myself to kick for this.. hahaha. BTW, do you get the Denon OSD when the input is set to HTPC? have you tried the latest drivers for your graphics card ? No not yet, but it's an old computer after all... Over the weekend I will try various combinations to isolate the problem... Update at your own risk though, because the fixes don't seem to be significant so far..
infected flow Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Just to let you know i think there are new drivers for that video card.... Cheers
myrantz Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 Just to let you know i think there are new drivers for that video card.... Thanks, one of the many things i gotta try this weekend.. I doubt new video drivers will solve it though.. After the microprocessor reset, i can't even get text modes to work now. But i feel so special being the only person in the world to have this problem. hahahaha...

If ever I see a firmware update available, Ive always gone ahead and updated thinking it can only improve things so thanks for the warning on this possible issue. About the Denon OSD - When ever I select HTPC as the input source I do get a little box that appears telling me what the input source is (overlayed on the desktop), I can't remember pressing menu or alike buttons whilst on the HTPC source though. Tell me what to do so I can answer your question. Jack
myrantz Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 I've never noticed the firmware update version numbers before, where do I look for them before I do an update ? I think hitting dimmer+status while powering on, then hit status will give you the version numbers. If ever I see a firmware update available, Ive always gone ahead and updated thinking it can only improve things so thanks for the warning on this possible issue. Hahaha.. You are too confident with Denon.. I think from 1.95 onwards the update will be more robust. Seems that way to me (with that "Authenticating" text and all)... About the Denon OSD - When ever I select HTPC as the input source I do get a little box that appears telling me what the input source is (overlayed on the desktop), I can't remember pressing menu or alike buttons whilst on the HTPC source though. Tell me what to do so I can answer your question. So when you change volume on the HTPC, the volume OSD will show up? That's great to hear actually coz it could really be a video card issue. (coz I can't get OSD on my HTPC). BTW, do you use HDMI or DVI from your video card?
hakka69 Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 I think hitting dimmer+status while powering on, then hit status will give you the version numbers. Return and Status to check the versions, i think the como above is for microprocessor reset.
myrantz Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 Return and Status to check the versions, i think the como above is for microprocessor reset. haha. sorry if i made a mistake.. I'm pretty sure microprocessor reset is standard+dsp simu? (first two buttons from the top left), there's also this (up+down+power on combo) which seems to reset something but I can't remember what. Also status+ENTER+power on will activate "remote lock"... (found that out by mistake and it's not documented in the manual). I need to make a list.

I just tried manually adjusting the master volume and rushing to my screen but I saw nothing of a volume osd. however if I get the remote out (never have to use this now) and press the menu key, I can confirm the menu osd appears over my desktop. The cable between my HTPC and amp has DVI on one end and HDMI on the other then I use a 10 metre HDMI cable between my amp and screen. Jack
