Over at GadgetZone, we have posted an article on how LCD and plasma television works. While many of you already know all this stuff, it may be useful for those that don't.

http://loader.gadgetzone.com.au/Movies/Oct...television.aspx

This article and others that we plan to put up are designed to present information to consumers that will help them get the best television they can get for the money the can afford to pay. Too many times, people walk into a store and walk out with something that isn't the best they can get simply because they didn't do their research before going out to buy.

I'd love to hear any feedback you guys have either about this article or about the site in general. I've been reading this site for ages and value your opinion.

Keep up the good work.

Seems a fair and concise assessment of both the main technologies, and the site overall is an easy read for gadget freaks like me. Another source of easy-read advice for non-technophiles on buying a TV and the associated gear is a 70+ page booklet written by the Gadget Guy to be found in and sponsored by, of all places, Hardly Normal

The saying 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing', but rocking up to a TV store with $2000 in your pocket and absolutely no idea about the things, putting all your faith in a salesperson working on commission, is not a good idea. Better a little knowledge from sources like these.

I believe LCD has now caught up to plasma in terms of black level. Take a current model Sony LCD vs Panasonic plasma, they both have the same black level (0.05cdm2). Samsung now has an LCD that can do true blacks. I belive the main deficiency of LCD is motion resolution (i.e motion blur) and this was not mentioned, but I guess people will see for themselves in the showrooms anyway.

Plasma on the other hand, the main issue for me is phosphor lag and the associated colour artefacts.

yeah they are really bloody close in the high end but many of the mid range and low end LCDs still have a way to come. There are obviously other limitations of both technologies but I think that the main two as the ones outlined. I am currently writing an actual buying guide which will go into more detail and actually recommend which type of TV to use depending on your usage, lighting etc. Ill also talk about 100Hz and the 1080p v720p debate. thanks for the feedback guys.. much appreciated.
