Got new Denon 3808 and strugling with the set up. I read many posts and the instruction, but I can't get the audio from pvr and dvd player. This is my conection setup:

PVR - HDMI - AVR (input)

DVD -HDMI - AVR (input)

AVR - Component (output)- TV (no picture and sound). I don't have HDMI input in the plasma, only RGB & component.

My first set up was like on the old AVR 1602: PVR -RGB- TV (video), PVR- coaxial-AVR (audio) and it worked

DVD -component- TV (video), DVD - AVR (audio)- optial, got the picture but no sound

I bought 2 HDMI cables to send both signals in one cable and to connect everything to the receiver, but can't figure out how to get it going.

In the Denon instruction I notice the advise that when connecting AVR with other HT components using HDMI, I must connect the monitor also with the HDMI (?).

Is that the source of my problem, or maybe something else. I know that this is very simple for most of the forum experts, who are "sick to death" reading my post, but

if any of you can spare few minutes to help me out, it will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Greg

OK, silly question maybe. Do you have speakers off the AVR or are you using the TV speakers?

Good chance no picture because you have not assigned the correct component output on the AVR.

If the sound is on the TV then you need to connect a cable that will carry it.

If not then you don't have the output assignments configured correctly.

Page 30 of the manual. Check Manual Setup > HDMI Setup > Audio > check that you have AMP selected.

You will need a HDMI connection to the TV for video as the 3808 will not convert HDMI to any other output including Component(although it will convert all other inputs to HDMI output)

Have you checked if the player/PVR needs to be set to output via HDMI?

So if he doesn't have HDMI to the plasma (which he says he doesn't) is his only option to go component and coaxial/optical from the PVR and DVD to the AVR?

Thanks too your advise I disconnected HDMI's, reconnected to the original settings, set the AVR inputs on PVR to coaxial, DVD to optical, receiver audio to AMP and SUCCESS. Everything is working perfectly!!

I guess my 2 new HDMI cables will have to wait for the new plasma or lcd. My plasma is 4 years old HD panel without speakers and tuner, capable of 1080i/720p. Having the basics going, tomorrow I will "tackle" Audyssey set up and after that, I will dedicate few days to figure out the main remote (pity I don't have an engineering or science degree).

Finaly, I got one more question regarding the heat from the receiver. The AVR is in the enclosed cabinet with the front doors open and the back wall cut out, so there is good ventilation. However, on top of the receiver I got DVD and PVR. Should I be concern about that (?). My old 1602 lasted in that position for 6 years without any problems, but it might be diferent with 3808 (?).

Thanks again, I hope I didn't bore you too much.

Cheers Greg

In regards to the main(pain :angry2: ) remote, just leave it in a cupboard someware. It looks nice, but its useless............

Just use the zone remote, it'll do most things you need. What it cant do, you can do via the menu :)

As Lyle stated, dont put your DVD player or PVR on top of it. It throws out plenty of heat. I'm using a 3808 as a pre/pro, so I'm not using the amplifiers in it, and it still gets hot from all the processing going on inside.

Have fun with the Audyssey features. I initially did a manual set up first, with a SPL meter and tape measure, and then tweaked it over the next couple of months. It sounded much better than my previous receiver did! :)

Then I ran Audyssey................. :D

Was planning on a speaker upgrade this year, but the whole system sounded so much better that I put the wallet away

Now you have your's up and running, enjoy it!

Sounds about right.

As Lyle mentioned, I would not put anything directly on the AVR leave a few inches clearance. When testing some equipment we had a Marantz DVD player sitting on top of a Marantz AVR, a few hours in and the DVD player started causing audible noise through the speakers, so I would defiantly not advise it ;)

So if he doesn't have HDMI to the plasma (which he says he doesn't) is his only option to go component and coaxial/optical from the PVR and DVD to the AVR?

Which means losing the HD audio codecs.

Is it possible to take audio from a HDMI input and video from a component input for the DVD and PVR? Requires two lots of cables and the devices to output component and HDMI at the same time. Looking at page 37/38 of the manual it looks like you can.

Running component for video willl also not give you the high resolution 1080/720 for BD (or HDDVD) and upscaled DVDs.

You might want to look into something like a HD fury which would allow your TV to have a HDMI input.

Er.......there's no HD audio codecs on DVD or FTA channels

Hi,

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for the 3808 as I am looking for one at the moment?

Er... My bad. Read DVD as HD-DVD/Bluray

Comment is still correct with respect to upscaling of DVDs though how much it's worth worrying about depends largely on the DVD player and the panel.

IF the HD-DVD/Bluray has analog 5.1 outputs and your AVR has analog 5.1 inputs then you can get the HD codecs. The amp won't display it but it should be the same. See the other thread where there are posts today about this aspect.

It IS important to be clear when writing here because we will all assume when you write DVD that you mean stock standard SD DVD.

Thanks, for all your replays and input, my computer died yesterday so I could't be part of your discussion. I am back on line and after reading your advise DVD & PVR are moving out of the cabinet.

My DVD player is new Denon 1740 and the PVR is LG LST 5403P. I haven't started the Audyssey yet (had to please my wife by doing paving in the backyard), but hoping to do it today.

Lastly, I paid $SG 1774 at $1.17 exchange and my son brought that from Singapore. Since than dollar nose dived even more, however with the Denons it is still much cheaper to buy them OS.

The Denon 1740 is a SD DVD player that upscales to 1080p.

It is NOT a HD-DVD nor a BD player and will NOT play these disks.

Thanks Lyle, I guess BD player and new plasma are next on my shopping list to take full advatage of my new receiver. I will have to do "alot more paving". Unfortunately there is nothing left to pave.

On the upside, you don't have to worry about the new Codecs nor mucking around with analog 5.1.

You should get a lot of enjoyment on of DD 5.1 and DTS on SD DVD.
