Sorny Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 After questions like DLP or LCD, 1080 or 720 I think the Optoma HD65 will suit both my budget and needs. This PJ will sit on a coffee table and project onto a wall. The room will be dedicated to the PJ but it will barely be used. We have a Panasonic 42" 7A in the family room for everyday viewing. Main purpose will be to watch the AFL when it comes back next year and the occasional movie when friends come over. Light control is mediocre during the day so a bright PJ is more important, which this model is. What brought this on was my wife brought home an Acer P5270 from work for the school holidays, we watched the AFL grand final, played PS3, all during the day and it was fabulous. This is a very nice, bright 4x3 PJ. Overseas forums are on the whole very positive but I cannot find any noise here. I would like to pull the trigger this week and was hoping someone local might have some feedback as I cannot find a store in Melbourne that has one on display to see it running for myself. Any opinions would be appreciated. Phil.
Sorny Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 Picked one up on Wednesday, very small machine.
Sorny Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 Hi, I have been running this little machine for over a week now. I have played PS3, watched movies and TV and the image quality is amazing for the price. 1080P looks stunning too. It is really bright and suitable for daytime viewing. I am curious as to why no one mentions Optoma when 720P projectors are mentioned? Epson/Benq/Mitz/Sanyo are the only names thrown in the ring. As an aside, I had about 25 family and friends over for the AFL Grand Final and then two movies afterwoods (unplanned but fun). We all had our eyes glued to the screen for nearly 6 hours with the occasional smoko. As a test I asked but no one knew what DLP was. I have read plenty about the RB effect and tired eyes but no one that day could say they had a problem. The people that day covered an age range between 23 to 84. Bye.

A good question as they are certainly very impressive on paper and incredibly well priced - One palce has yours on special for $1749 + free lamp + free screen! There has do be some downside or are they just so new than there an unknown commodity? Chops
procoholic Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 (edited) Agreed, I have Optima 720p very pleased with quality and picture image as well as Australian warranty on lamp and projector. I understand they are the largest selling brand in the US (stand corrected of course) Edited October 19, 2008 by procoholic
cooley Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 I'm thinking of picking one of these up from JustProjectors with the deal mentioned above - $1749 + free lamp + free screen. Has anyone bought this and know what the screen is like? Also to the projector itself, I've read a lot of reviews and they seem to be glowing so far - anybody know of the drawbacks to the machine? Cheers!

Also to the projector itself, I've read a lot of reviews and they seem to be glowing so far - anybody know of the drawbacks to the machine?Cheers! A while back one of the PC mags did a review of about 30 projectors (PC user maybe?) - they didn't say anything specifically negative about it but that for the RRP$ it wasn't as good value as others in the same bracket ..... now, IIRC the RRP in the article was a LOT more than the special above .... so I would guess, perhaps, this pricing is probably a nice sweet spot for it and more reflective of a good deal compared to the other similar (slightly dearer) competition. JMHO though Chops
Sorny Posted October 25, 2008 Author Posted October 25, 2008 (edited) Cooley, I bought that deal a few weeks ago but haven't taken the screen out of the box as I project onto a wall. I am very happy with this machine and the wife is too. She is a teacher and sees lots of pj's in action, admitedly only data pj's but she can determine if pic quality is ok or not because of her exposure to some crappy pj's. I had initially wanted a 1080 pj and after showing the wife a W5000 running she agreed the image was stunning and we should get one. Thing is, even the cheapest price that I could find on a W5000 is a lot and even though money isn't a problem I still baulked at such an expense. My wife doesn't normally comment on any electronics I buy but thinks this pj is one of the best things I have bought. She can't see much of a difference between the two, the HD 65 seriously puts out a bright, quality image. I play PS3 at night with 4 down lights on in low lamp mode! The only negative is that the fan does make more noise than I would like but it isn't a deal breaker. Phil Edited October 25, 2008 by Sorny
cooley Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Thanks Guys! Three days ago I was looking at LCD TV's and hadn't even considered a projector. Now, having seen this one at the price, I'm pretty much sold! Think I'll be ordering this on Monday. Would still love to know what that screen quality is like though...
Sorny Posted October 26, 2008 Author Posted October 26, 2008 The screen is a 94" Ambertec if that helps
cooley Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Received the projector on Thursday and I have to say I am disappointed. The machine itself is great, small and lightweight, and in general the picture is excellent EXCEPT - I am one of those unfortunate few that see the Rainbow Effect just about ALL The time! It's very distracting and actually hurts my eyes after a while. I work in the cinema industry so am tuned to any kind of on-screen problems, which is probably why I am so sensitive to it. If you are lucky enough not to see the RBE then this would be an awesome machine. But now it looks like I'll have to offload this one and look into buying an LCD projector (probably the Epson TW-700). Anyone in the market for a HD65?
cooley Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Here is the Ebay link to the projector for sale... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...s=tab%3DSelling
Loafar Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Hi there, I am a newby just signed up 10 mins ago, i have purchased the HD65 should be here on friday hopefully from Just Projectors. been on the net researching for weeks.,any way i hope it is as good as you guys say it is. Will post my opinion next week. I had a Benq w100 for a week, compared to my Notevision 800x400 it blew me away,so i had to get something even better hence the HD65..
Sorny Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 I have clocked up 45 hrs so far. In that time I would have had about 30 diferent people over and not one has seen a rainbow. Great PJ.
Loafar Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Hi there troops, Had mine (HD65) arriving this friday, yeh wright!!!, some how between Just Projectors and TNT they have managed to send it to the wrong place, with neither accepting responsibiliy, so i quess i will need to wait a little longer..

Loafar Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Hi there Leads, as in HDMI and Component, what are the longest any of you are running in length? and is there any degradation of the signal..I have been told that with ten metre component i will lose some but not with the HDMI.

Wont lose anything with HDMI as long as they are thick enough like 26awg.
