I am a bit new to all of this. Have done some research and visit to shops and a hi fi specialist.

I believe this package would be suitable for our needs. Don't watch many DVDs etc.

They have a package price of $2000 for Focal.JM lab Chorus 714 V, Marantz PM4001 & CD5001 which seems okay for Oz prices. This system would be a huge leap above the system I have now.

Would appreciated any feedback or comments.

Is this a good price for the package?

I think thats about as good as your gonna do mate. Its like $2350 RRP yeah? Nice music setup it will be!

Yes thats abt the RRP. I dont know the market though - does rrp mean anything in hi fi?

I will be going to look at it over the next week or so.

maybe you should go to a few shops and say you want to listen to a $2k combo and see what they have. They might throw some interesting combos at you with brands you havent heard of.

That's a pretty good suggestion. Additionally, if you're wanting a focal set up, it might be worth contacting Instyle hifi in Five Dock and seeing what sort of package they can do for you.

If your budget can stretch maybe a few more hundred dollars, I would recommend the excellent Marantz CD6002 and Marantz PM6002 combination. This combination is superb - for the money. I am not familiar with Focal.JM Lab loudspeakers; I have briefly auditioned a couple of their large floorstanding loudspeakers, and all I know is that it is a French company.

I would say a pair of Krix Equinox stand-mount loudspeakers would go well with the Marantz CD6002 and PM6002 combination, or even a pair of Monitor Audio Silver Series RS1.

That is exactly what i wld like to get now that I have done more research - its a bit more than a few hundred dollars more though.

If you know wher I can do better then I would love to know.

no but I will now you have suggested it again.

any secret codes I need to use :)

Just say "hi Mario, a few guys at DTV forum recomended you"... he'll probably have a little laugh as he says he hears it all the time, then he'll get on with helping you out.

I've been there once, he was very very helpful with auditioning and did the best price in sydney by far. Hence, i walked out with my current speaker package and could not be happier.

Mario (store owner/manger) was really helpful in setting up a special account with the distributor to order in my Benchmark DAC1 at a price that was very competative.

JDH.

have you tried instyle?

Hey mate,

Which part of Australia are you in? The CD6002 and PM6002 are a significant improvement on the lower Marantz ranges. I think they retail ay $800.00 each but if you purchase them both at the same time, I would say it would be possible to get them as low as $1,200.00 in total.

I am In Sydney.

If that where possible ($1200) I would probably jump at that without further research. I really like what I have seen on the 6002s esp the CD player.

Do you reckon I could get some good floor stand speakers for $800 (or below) that would do that system justice.

To think, this time last week I was thinkling of a sub $700 out of the box home theatre package as being a big step up.

try build it yourself VAF speakers? they might make one that cheap. Krix apex is well worth considering. PSB if you can find them, wharfdale and perhaps tangent and mission would be to put on the short list. Most of which will have around 1000$ rrp but should be haggled down to 800 no worries.

Id put my money on the VAF or krix. However if you gettting that serious a bit of kit, perhaps look in the secondhand market as well? sometimes you can get speakers for around 1/3-1/2 of their original price and therefore get a better quality speaker for around the same money as an entry level floorstander.

good luck! :)

Cant see myself building speakers :)

Krix Apex - they were suggested by one dealer so would probably be okay with them.

Yes I will also look at second hand speakers. Somebody PMed me name of place that has a lot od second hand / clearance.

Just need to find somebody that will sell me the Marantz CD6002 and PM6002 for $1200 - any takers feel free to PM me.

I am in the mood to spend on some nice hi fi gear :)

I can assure you $1,200.00 for the pair is most certainly possible. When you go to negotiate, just tell them $1,200.00 and you will take them both now, or leave it. With the credit crunch on now, and retail being extremely slow, I cannot see someone saying "no".

I can buy the pair for $1,300.00 here in Perth with barely a whiff of a haggle, so an additional $100.00 off will be easy - surely.

Speakers-wise, if you definitely want floor-standers (which I personally prefer, anyway), Krix Apex MkIV are lovely. Otherwise, check out Monitor Audio's BR5, as well. Very good for the money.

The PM6002 is a superb integrated stereo amplifier, and I am absolutely surprised that Marantz is able to manufacture a grunty good all-round unit such as this for this price.

RRP on the CD6002 is $799.00 and RRP on the PM6002 is also $799.00, so $199.00 off each unit if you buy both is certainly possible, I would say.

Well I hope so. In the protected hi fi market that seems like a pretty big drop. Then again stockmarket is crashing around us.

Do you suggest I just do a ring around the Marantz dealers in Sydney?

I have Singapore prices also but after freight cost etc is included then I would rather buy here in Sydney.

It is not uncommon - for certain brands, anyway - to have up to 20-25% off RRP, if you haggle.

I have always found that if you are seriously going to purchase gear, it is better to step into the shops that sell these gear, and now that you know the sort of money you are willing/happy to spend, go in there, take the initiative, and if they say "no", try somewhere else. I personally would be surprised if more than one or two shops say "no".

I sent you a PM suggesting to try Absolute Hifi in Liverpool. I have bought a fair bit of my gear from there ( Panasonic Panel, Marantz Amp & 5-disk CDP, B&W Speakers, Velodyne Sub ) and was very happy with their pricing and attitude. I found the people there much easy going to deal with.

goodluck
