Hi All,

Looking to upgrade my Sony 1200ES reciever to something with more power, features and HDMI connections. Have been looking at the Denon 4308 or Onkyo NR905. It will be used 50/50 between music and movies. I believe both are very good recievers and would like to know what experiences you have had with either?

Hey saint,

Ive just ordered a 4308 from Singapore through KEC (about AUD$2700  ) and i have the same speakers as you apart from the sub so i'll be able to let you know how it sounds in a couple of days or so when the AMP arrives and i get it all plugged together. How do you find the JBL speakers and what did you pay for them if you dont mind me asking. Mine are still fresh out of the box and itching to be powered by the DENON....

P.S i did'nt go for the ONKYO due to its heat output, my tv unit doesnt have the cooling capacity space also the DENON is firmware upgradable via internet (can be a risk though) wereas the ONKYO needs to be taken to the shop for any updates, (i stand to be corrected if im wrong about that).

Either way both im sure are great units with pro's and cons.

Cheers

Here is a good place to start to decide between those two:

Also note that the new 906 etc are on the horizon. Comparing the new xx6 Onkyos

Specifically, the 4308 (and 3808) are a bit lacking in the video processing. Both have poor 1080i de-interlacing frequently covered in reviews due to the Faroudja video processor. The 905 has the Reon which is a much better device. If you don't have any sources that need scaling though it might not really matter.

Onkyos are known to run fairly warm as mentioned.

Are you going to import or buy local. The Denon will probably be more expensive if you do.

Personally I'm torn at the moment to either get the 4308 (or just the 3808) or a 905/906.

The JBL's are nice speakers. Due to my reciever and setup I have not got anywhere near the full capacity out of them. What cables are you using? Will you bi-wire the fronts? I think i paid about $3300 with my sub. Please let me know how it sounds with the Denon. I was actually looking to purchase it from Singapore and have sent an email to KEC, no reply yet.

Im not much when it comes to HIFI know how apart from what i read here, so with that in mind ill say that im simply using JayCar speaker wire and Bannana plugs and as far as the Denon goes i should receive it today (Yaaay) as you can track where your delivery is via UDP's website. Give KEC a call they may not respond to emails until they have spoken to you first, you will probably have to call them a few times before they pick up.

I'll probably bi wire somwhere down the track once ive got it all hooked up and run in.

BTW i paid about $3400 with JBL sub ES250 which im swapping for JBL L8400P plus $700 sounds like you got a better deal

Excellent.

Please let me know if it arrived OK and how it sounds? I will give KEC a call today. I think I might go for the 3808 as it has everything I need. Although the 4308 is very tempting.

G'day mate,

I would say the Onkyo 905, primarily because of its value-for-money. Sonically, I have found the recent Onkyo's to be better (to me, personally) than the recent Denon's.

The 4308 arrived today in Perfect condition and am now in the middle of setting it up, the sound is awesome and i couldnt be happier but i have come from a logitech 5.1 setup so the improvement goes without saying. Anyway back to the manual and i will update here once ive had a bit more of a play..........................
