Lisa1965 Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 I asked elsewhere, but thought i'd try here. We've just bought a new plasma tv, we used to have a smaller normal TV. Since installing it, the foxtel picture isn't very good quality. Is there any suggestions on what I should be doing with it to fix it? A dummy's version. I have an antenna man coming monday to hook up a new antenna for the FTA DTV channels. Would he be able to do something with the foxtel picture too?
Guest hairykewell Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 (edited) Make sure you have set in the system settings that the aspect ratio of your TV is 16:9. Also as a minimum you should be using component cables for Video output. Depending on what box you have you need a scart to component cable, I'm not sure but I think only the new IQ2 has HDMI output. The foxtel channels that broadcast with an AR of 4:3 look pretty bad on plasma/lcd especially when you choose to stretch them. Edited October 4, 2008 by hairykewell

If you are using the composite output of Foxtel (video through single yellow cable with L/R audio) then change the cable to S-video or component (video through 3 cables R/G/B with L/R audio). The improvement will be noticeable but will not match FTA digital. Note that changing cables requires changing the settings of your Foxtel STB. Also make sure the Foxtel STB settings have been changed to suit your new TV, set the TV type to 16:9 (on remote push setup, select system setup, select system settings, select picture settings, select TV type, change settings, select save new settings)
donny221 Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 I have a feeling that you would be best to upgrade to the new FOXTEL IQ2 as like I did. When I recently bought my large plasma I was told to expect average picture quality for the older FOXTEL, so I upgraded to IQ2 and really the picture quallity and the features from the IQ2 is amazing!! I highly recomend!!

The iQ2 also seems pretty buggy from reports in this forum so i wouldn't suggest being in any hurry. I have an iQ to a the recently released 32inch panasonic LCD 800 and the picture quality is fine.

Ok.. But there is a diffence in the picture quality with going through the HDMI instead of the RCA on my FOXTEL IQ2, and my FOXTEL IQ2 is a really good product.

The SD picture quality on all STU's is identical Since the new firmware the over exaggerated bugs have been fixed Ok.. Using Component output on any of the STU's will be better than Composite HDMI and Component will achieve the same quality
Lisa1965 Posted October 5, 2008 Author Posted October 5, 2008 I have no idea what STU's, HDMI's, iq2's etc are. So it's all gobbldy gook to me. The settinga are 16:9, and I do know it is not plugged in by "componant". It has the yellow/red/white plugs. So when the antenna man comes to fix it up so we can watch HD FTA (yeah I know what those two mean, lol) then I will ask him about the componant stuff. He will probably look at me like im an idiot, but I am sure he'll know what i mean. Thanks again I can't believe how helpful and knowledgable the people are on this place. Brilliant. Thanks
diggler2002 Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 When I tried S video, had interference in the picture. I also found composite cable (red, white, yellow) to be not very good. I use component cable. I find that using just one of these fat cables to substitute for the thin yellow composite cable gives a much better picture. These cables are pretty cheap on e bay. Of course, HDMI is ideal if you have iq2.

Have you actually used the IQ2? The IQ2 is much better on my 50" Plasma... I use the IQ2's 1080i upscaling via HDMI and the quality difference over the IQ1 is significant. Upscaling all 576i programs to 1080i makes a difference alright, It's really the better upscaling ability of the IQ2 that makes the world of difference for HD LCD and Plasma owners. It's really the only benefit to IQ2. I have an iQ to a the recently released 32inch panasonic LCD 800 and the picture quality is fine. It would be noticeably better via the IQ2.

You have gone from a CRT TV i am assuming? Your old CRT only had a maximum resolution of SD which was fine as foxtel is broadcast in SD. Your new TV has a HD native resolution so the picture is stretched around 4 times to make it fit the screen.

Thanks STU = set top unit, the foxtel box HDMI = high definition multimedia interface, the most common (albeit over hyped) connection used for HD opt-out on devices IQ2 = the foxtel recorder Using component on your foxtel STU will not make a noticeable difference in quality

My the quality be auto upscaled or do I need 2 change it in the settings?
