Then it seems that your tech was as accurately informed as the average Austar CSO.

The USB port does nothing. Its only there because the STB from Thomson had it present. Will Austar do anything with it in the future? Who can tell, but judging by the deathly slow progress at even making the MyStar work properly, it will never do anything.

The ethernet port does nothing either... unless you count instantaneously locking up the MyStar when traffic is directed at as being a feature.

Speaking of that ethernet port.

When plugging the ethernet connection into my router: instant lockup of the mystar

When plugging the ethernet connection into my yamaha receiver: the mystar keeps working, but nothing detected on the amp. Has anyone tried a crossover cable, I dont have one ATM so cant try it.

I suspect you get the instant lockup when connecting to the router because there is broadcast traffic which makes the ethernet in the mystar generate an interrupt which probably isn't handled, but when hooking up to your yamaha it survives as their isn't misc broadcast traffic coming out of the yamaha.

What purposes does/did the USB and network ports serve on the original Thompson boxes? And how hard would it be to activate them on the Mystar? If the ethernet port was able to provide services such as remote recording (yeah, I know it's available on the web) or even interactive services, then that'd be a plus.

Given that the box is running Austar's custom software there is zip chance of making the USB port do anything that Austar doesn't want it to, apart from perhaps running a fan or a lamp.
