kimzor Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I'll buy it from Play-Asia. Does Amazon export games to Australia? I always thought they don't

Abaddon Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 (edited) Amazon US doesn't post games to Oz. Play-Asia FTW Edited September 29, 2008 by Abaddon

Will that be allowed? yes mate, thats what a lot of us did with the latest GTA. This has been brandished around a lot, but there never seems to be any consensus when it comes to the 'legality' of importing games refused classification. There are always some who appear to claim that it's unauthorized, etc. Not saying i believe such, but just putting it on the record. Realistically, at the end of the day the gamer will import if desired and almost certainly not have it 'caught/confiscated'. This will take the record up to about 85 games or so that have 'suffered' as a result of the absence of R18+ classification.
pgdownload Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 This will take the record up to about 85 games or so that have 'suffered' as a result of the absence of R18+ classification.People seem to assume that R18+ for PC games would translate directly from say a similar movie depiction of events. There's nothing to say that most of these games might well still fail a R18+ (game) classification.FWIW I do think there's a place for some limits to be placed on in game violence (just as there are in movies). A movie experience is something that its still relatively easy for the mind to appreciate a distance/wall between the on screen actions and yourself. A modern PC game equivalent dilutes that to quite a degree. Regards Peter Gillespie
xr06t Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 from the article: Because there is no R18+ rating for video games, any game that exceeds a rating of MA15+ must be refused classification making it illegal to sell in Australia. import away people!!
DansDans Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 (edited) Well I pre-ordered from Play-Asia. Due to ship today or tomorrow Will let everyone know if it arrives. UPDATE - Status is preparing order on Play-Asia, however it says it wont ship until the 3rd Edited September 30, 2008 by DansDans
Dr. Smythe Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 (edited) Amazon US doesn't post games to Oz. Play-Asia FTW They do actually... or at least they say they send internationally. Haven't actually completed the order process so it's possible they wouldn't allow Australia specifically, but it's usually all or nothing when it comes to international shipments from Amazon and it's stores. They have a section on Amazon called 'International Direct' where you can identify quickly all the stuff they will ship o/s and Video Games for all consoles/PC are in there... better pricing typically on Play-Asia, but could be a good option if they have specials on or for whatever else. Edit: Regarding price of Silent Hill [PS3] specifically... Play-Asia sells for US$64.90 with US$3.40 shipping... Amazon sell for US$59.90 with US$4.99 shipping. Happy e-tailing! Cheers, Doc. If you arent fussy Play-Asia sells the Asian version for $59.90 - save $5 off the US version and cheaper shipping should mean Play-Asia is cheaper... just.. Also, I just logged in and noticed the price in my invoice for the game was still when our dollar was high - its listed there are $64.90US and $66.52AUD. Too bad I wont be getting it for that price.

Cool... apples with apples is what I was showing, but yes you're right... also you would probably get your copy from Play-Asia afaster than Amazon given their proximity to Oz. Though that said, there have been some pretty good reports of Amazon's standard shipping coming through in the BD threads. Either way - it's another reliable alternative to what is an overpriced, underappreciated market here in Australia. Cheers, Doc.
dunnas Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Use these codes at play-asia and it's a real no contest. They're multi use. UK-GCS-BKJ - $5 off $50+ orders - Exp 15/10/08 UU-ZUV-CHQ - $8 off $80+ orders - Exp 15/10/08
MC DUI Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 (edited) The game has just been reviewed at IGN and only got like 6.7 They state that the game whilst good graphically, just doesn't feel like Silent Hill. Mainly because the scares just aren't there, and the game only tries to be scarry by throwing cheap jump scares at you, there just isn't any tension in the gameplay. Interestingly they say one of the main reasons for the lowered tension level is the improved controls over the older games, your character can run and jump around with ease and the game has great aiming controls with weapons. Very different from the clunky, slow and barely armed characters in the older games. Basically they say the game boils down to a generic action game due to the lack in atmosphere and true scares. kingz113 Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Wow is that really a bad thing? Sounds just what I like, better graphics and better control.. Seems to be more a pro than a con. IGN can rarely be trusted nowadays. I've bought a couple of their "low-rated" games and still had immense fun playing and replaying those games.
Sicarius123 Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I bought my GTA from the UK (to keep it PAL to minimise compatibility issues which didn't happen anyway). Refused classification isn't banned, it just makes it illegal to sell in Aus, not illegal to buy.
nang3 Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 come on guys, they know whats best for us and i like not having to think for myself !! /sarc

No, it is actually illegal to import banned games. I've still yet not heard of anyone having their game withheld by customs so there's really no risk involved even if technically it is illegal.

It was NEVER banned - and the version that most of us have (the US version) was never submitted to the ex-OFLC for rating - a modified Australian version was submitted. Its NEVER EVER been officially banned, so please stop using it in this argument These are the only games that have been RC’ed this year Title Media Date 1 SILENT HILL: HOMECOMING Computer Games Multi Plat.. Sicarius123 Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Some things they should just leave alone. Anyone who's going to be stupid enough to abuse morphine because it's used in their favourite game Fallout 3 should be left to earn their place on the Darwin Awards instead of being babied through life.

In the grand scheme of things, how were they able to differentiate Fallout 3 and Bioshock's depictions?
X-phile Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 IGN can rarely be trusted nowadays. I've bought a couple of their "low-rated" games and still had immense fun playing and replaying those games. Yes, except that IGN isn't the only 'game' in town. Have you tried hitting up Metacritic or Game Rankings for a broader-based opinion? According to Metacritic, the game is currently averaging 72% (ie, mixed or average reviews) and that's not a good omen going forward. Generally, when a game has been 'blooded' with mixed or average feedback, it doesn't get much better. Which, in a nutshell, means many of us can cross off Silent Hill 5 as a potential purchase (unless you're seriously starved for triple-A fare going forward - cough, Fallout 3).
