DR.ZOIDBERG Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Hey Guys I get these issue with my TV Reception from time to time. It happens on all of my TV which are all good Brands (Sony & Samsung) and have built in HD Turners When I am watching TV and someone turns the light on in another room it interferes with the image, sometimes the sound drops out and the image gets a line of squares on it then resumes back to normal, this only last for 1 sec or so if that and only happens now and then, not all the time. Also happens when the dishwasher is on and it changes though its cycle. Anyone know how to fix this?? All my TVs are connected via Belkin PureAV boards
MickB...... Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 (edited) Sounds like the cabling from the antenna to the TV. Make sure it is quad shield RG6 cable. I had a similar problem with the microwave causing interference. New cabling solved the problem. Also look at any signal boosters you have connected. Turn it off and see if that helps. Make sure the cabling from the antenna to the wall sockets follows the shortest path possible. Also make sure the leads from the wall socket to the TV are RG6 quad shield and are not near the power cables. Make sure your TV is the first in line when connecting multiple devices to the antenna like VCR's, PVR's, etc. Or add another wall plug socket for just the TV. Be careful with signal splitters. I also had a problem with birds bending blades on the antenna. This could be a contributing factor. Edited September 29, 2008 by MickBrown1965
mtv Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 DR.ZOIDBERG, The problem is known as impulse noise interference. Try a forum search.... there are numerous posts about it. Basically, it's electrical impulses which are causing errors in the digital data, which your receiver can't correct and you get glitches. It can enter your receiver in several ways, as mentioned, via the coax cable, if it is not good-quality, well-shielded, or if it is installed in close proximity to mains power cables. You flylead from the antenna wall outlet should also be a well-shielded type, not the cheap this cables with moulded plugs. All connectors, outlet plates, splitters etc should also be fully-shielded... usually F types. The antenna itself can also pick up impulse noise. Poor connections, corrosion, or damage will all contribute. Antennas designed to receive channels below channel 6 (Eg: ABC analogue Ch 2) are prone to picking up impulse noise. The antenna should be designed to receive only Ch 6 & above (in metro areas) or sometimes UHF-only in regional areas... basically, an antenna optimised for digital reception in your area. The antenna must be installed on the roof in a location which captures strong 'quality' digital signals. The higher the signal level and especially quality, the more effective it will be at overpowering any interference. Amplifiers also amplify noise/interference, so it can be critical in selecting and installing the correct type, if required at all. Preferably, no amp is best. Use an antenna with higher gain, rather than try to compensate with an amp on an antenna with lower output. Sometimes fitting ferrite clamp on supressors on power cables, close to the receiver and on other devices creating the pulses... washing machine, etc, can help. Sometimes the interference is not withing the home, but being generated elsewhere.. industrial areas etc... This type of interference can be extremely difficult to control, however, this doesn't appear to be the issue in your case though, as you said it's appliances/lights in your home causing the problem. Additional filtering between the antenna and outlet can also help. Where are you located? What antenna do you have, how/where is it mounted, and what type of coax are you using?
DR.ZOIDBERG Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 Sorry but I have no idea what type of Antenna I have, its a big one tho haha I am using Belkin Pure AV boards which the coax plugs into then goes from that to TV. No idea on the coax sorry. Wish I could just buy some sort of thing to stop it and its a plug and play device for ppl like me haha
mtv Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Best then to have a pro installer check out your antenna etc and advise you further.
DR.ZOIDBERG Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 so theres nothing that can be purchased to fix this?
mtv Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 so theres nothing that can be purchased to fix this? Yes, all the things I mentioned in my detailed post.. you may need all of them, or only some of them, however you really need someone with the expertise to determine which ones are required.
charlesc Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 ...Wish I could just buy some sort of thing to stop it and its a plug and play device so theres nothing that can be purchased to fix this? I think you're hoping that you can just go and and buy a 'device thing' and the problem will go away. Unfortunately it's usually not as simple as this. Impulse interference can become an issue for all sorts of reasons. mtv's detailed response identified this. There are a lot of things that could be tried, either as DIY, or by a pro installer. The quickest solution I'm sure would come from someone with the right type of signal metering equipment and the experience of knowing what to do.
DR.ZOIDBERG Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 ok thanks guy Anyone recommend someone that deals in this line of work on the Gold Coast?
