Juicester Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Would it be possible to have an optical cable that was somehow faulty, which meant that it only carried a stereo signal instead of the whole 5.1 signal? I had a fw update done on my reciever recently to fix a popping issue on dd and dts tracks, but now for some reason I can't get 5.1 from FTA channels. I know Cars, which was on the other night, was broadcast in 5.1, but my reciever only shows 2 channels (lit up). I can't decided wether it's a cable issue or an issue with the input. Any ideas what to do? It's driving me crazy.... perhaps i should plug the ps3 into the dvt input on the yammie to see if it would do 5.1 or not? then i could cross the input off as the problem..

Juice, I don't know the technology but can not believe that a cable could faultlessly pass 2.0 but not 5.1 - sounds like either a config issue in your STB (but assume you haven't touched) or something screwy in your AVR. You're on the right track - if you can get optical from another feed to exactly the same input you can trace it. I don't have a Yamaha but is there an option to set default surround mode? Maybe that input has been defaulted to 2.0 - my recollection is that a 5.1 signal could be downmixed to 2.0 so maybe that's your problem???
Juicester Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 nah it's not a stb, using inbuilt HD tuner. Thing is, it was working prior to fw update - which is why I'm suspicous.. The avr is certainly on the right settings and I can't see why it would be downmixing the signal..
SHO Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I can say that i watched the same movie with the kids & it was only in 2ch dolby digital.

Jeffie1503561482 Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 just put it on 9HD and see if its 5.1.
50mxe20 Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Cars in Perth was 5.1 and very good sound it was too. It's more likely that some setting in the AVR has been changed when they did the update?
Juicester Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 i think sho has the record for posts in a row. 5! nice one! It's annoying that different states get different audio signals.. I just presumed vic got 5.1 because of the Dolby thread on dtv forum that said it was broadcast in 5.1... I'll check with the ps3 tonight to see if the input will do 5.1 at all, and then go from there. Cheers

Cheers The firmware update most likely reset your decoder settings to the default - if the default setting is PCM then you would get something akin to this. Check the setting on your AVR to see if it is set to auto and dolby 5.1 is also set to auto or on. Also check the setting on the TV/DVB box to make sure it's not also set on PCM only (or worse 2 channel downmix)

I think you are just experiencing a large solar storm situated mostly around your house. The faulty optical lead is letting the intense solar radiation interfere with your signal. As everyone knows this radiation is mostly at the blue end of the spectrum. It would therefore remove the surround sound light beam but not the stereo light beam and cause this issue. As for the craziness your feeling I think its mainly (but not all) due to the radiation. If I was you I would grab my lead and run. or what chopsus said Edited September 29, 2008 by HTD
Guest Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 If I was you I would grab my lead and run. or what chopsus said Or - cover your head and lead in tinfoil to isolate it from the radiation (So bad on so many levels) Back to the OP's original question though: NO an optical cable carries digital signals so it would either work or not, if it was cutting out, then maybe, but your optical cable cannot make a 5.1 signal a 2.1 signal.

I run digital optical from my PIoneer plasma to amp. I had noticed that programs were advertised as Dolby Digital but never played as Dolby Digital through the amp. After going through the plasma manual I had to change a setting on the plasma to output Dolby through optical - now I get Dolby Digital displaying on the amp. Cars sounded and looked great the other night! 5.1 Dolby Digigtal!!

Makes me wonder how many people have gear out their not set up properly, sad really 'cause they probably don't even know what they are missing ..... I guess I am just a pedantic fiddler, I just can't help myself but turn everything on and off to find out what it does.

Juicester Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 42THPZ700A - or the short version. 42" PZ700A. Panasonic Plasma.... just had to 'check' the audio option to Auto instead of the other option, and make sure 'Surround' was turned on.
