curious1 Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I've got a friend who wants to take a dvd recorder to his mum in Chile (ntsc/240v) on his next visit, they are very expensive there apparently. She already has a HD digital display, but I'm wondering if the recorder would need to be modded to play NTSC dvd's, or do most recorders play both? Any recommendations? Doesn't need to have a hard drive. Thanks, C1
gamma male Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 (edited) As far as i know all recent DVD recorders in Australia will have no problems with PLAYBACK of any DVDs (PAL oir NTSC). However where you will have a problem is recording TV signals as the Australian version if Digital TV is pretty unqiue so, chances are, it would not be able to record any digital TV programs there. If your recorder also has an analogue tuner this may work in some PAL parts of the world, but it would not be able to record NTSC analogue signals either. Of course you would also not have any warranty if anything goes wrong with it either! In other words , for most useage, it would just end up being a DVD player in Chile (not a recorder) so it does not seem worth the effort? Edited September 29, 2008 by gamma male
pgdownload Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Definitely (obviously?) any DVDR with a digital tuner would be of no use overseas. However since the large majority of DVDRs only come with analogue tuners this isn't really a problem. There seems to be a number of such DVDRs that play and record both NTSC and PAL - should only take a look into the specs or manual to confirm this. Issues such as warranty are a definite consideration though, but up to you. Personally I'd also suggest paying a bit extra and getting a hard drive model as they make recording TV for just watching and deleting a lot easier (and you get nice features like PAUSE live TV and better ad skipping) - then you need only burn a few DVDs (edited on the harddrive) for the stuff you really want to keep. NB You mention a HD TV. Be aware that you can only record to SD PQ on a DVDR (you can record HD channels, just only to SD PQ). Also be aware that many such TVs don't allow the digital signal to be outputted - you might need to get a separate external STB to plug into the DVDR in this case. Regards Peter Gillespie Not recommending but looks like the DMR-ES15 has settings for recording from a NTSC source (Should be easily under $250 in store) PS If you want to test you could try in store and find a STB with an option to output NTSC in its menu. Then see how it hooks up. Regards Peter Gillespie

Thanks, I've got an old Mediastar HD-STB that outputs NTSC, we'll take that shopping with us.
alanh Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 All, Chile is supposed to be making a decision between DVB-T, ASTC or ISDB-T in August this year. No result as yet. The best DVD recorder to get is one which will accept HDMI or component signals. I suppose the recorder may be used to send images back to Australia. If this is the case a camera which records DVDs may be better. AlanH
