Hi

What's the general feeling on Tannoy.

My father-in-law has a pair of floor standers that he has had for 14 years.

Cost him $1700 back then but I must say that they give out fantastic sounding music etc.

Anywhere to buy Tannoy or sample them in Perth and just wondering why I don't here them mention much in this forum?

I have a pair of S8's and am very happy with them, love the SQ. There is even an upgrade developed by forum member ozcal that will improve SQ even further which I'm still to get done.

I always found there "dual concentrics" (S6, S8 & earlier) to be nice speakers, nothing special about there conventional speakers though IMO

Ditto for the S6's. Have them across the fronts, S6's mains & rears, C6 centre. Nice details and clarity without being harsh, even at high volumes. I guess the only con would be is that they're bass shy, but then again, its design to roll off at 60hz for the sub to kick in at 60hz an below. The centre has a nice balanced sound for vocals without it being nasally or harsh.

Ozcal, what sort of upgrades are available for the Saturn series?

cheers

That is because not many people own Tannoy speakers. In Melbourne I know Livingston Audio stocks Tannoy and Audiophiles stocks probably only the expensive Dimension series and Prestige series of speakers. There is a giant vacuum in Tannoy range they just don't have any speakers priced between 3000 to 8000 range. I own a pair of Tannoy Dimension TD10 speaker. My experience with TD10 is that they probably has sweet sounding top and midrange, its sound stage is very precise and dynamic. TD10 use a 10 inch driver and to some people it may not have the very deep bass extension but for me the bass is quite good for my style of music.

I don't think he like to sell the Tannoy but more likely he likes to buy a pair of Tannoy.

Ive got a little 8 inch sealed sub. Probably not ideal for big ol HT explosions, but it performs really well in my little 2.1 music setup.

Hi guy's , Yep I rebuilt my Saturn S8's.The Tannoy Saturn drive units and cabinet are well put together though suprisingly for a speaker of this original cost only the baffel is mdf with all the rest looking like chipboard.

Internal cabling is very thin and the crossover is pcb mounted with very basic components.

My initial upgrades revolved around replacing the iinternal cabling , hard wiring the crossover on an mdf board and upgrading the capcitors and resistors in the hf leg of the crossover.

I used Mundorf Supreme cap and mox resistors.

I replaced the original Tannoy Plinths with 2 heavy and rather pretty wodden chopping board which made the speakers far more stable on the floor.

The important part , how do the upgrades sound: Well It is difficult to comment on this as the upgrade process was rather protracted and many of the other components in my system changed during this time.Overall for the couple of hundred dollars cost of the upgrade I am happy .

The upgrade work is not for the faint of heart because you have to destroy the original crossover to recycle the inductors and impedance matching components.

Tannoys inductors are all ferrite cored , even in their expensive speakers and while one can find aircored equivalents finding ones with the same dcr was for me next to immpossible and there was no garuntee that better inductors would radically improve the sound or improve it at all.

If you wanted to do a basic upgrade and leave the pcb in place all you need to do is desolder the 2.2 uf and .22uf caps and the resistor in the hf leg of the crossover , gently remove them from the board and replace with something like the Mundorf products.Note: the Mundorf caps are much larger than the ones Tannoy used and will take a bit of shoehorning into place if this is the desired route.

I have little electronics experience but was very grateful for the technical help from Andrew of Aslan Speakers.

The next stage of the upgrade will be to remove the crossovers entirely from the speaker box and mount them in their own isolated boxes to free the crossover from the effects of vibration inside the speakers and from mamgnetic intereference from the bass unit.Who knows just how much effect this will have or whether there will be any gains at all but it will be an interesting and reversible experiment.

All the best,

Gordon

Well done Gordon, S series are pretty nice sounding and adding better components and bracing the cabinets will only sound better as you have found. Been thinking of doing something simalar to the Dalis i own.

I personally never thought much of the S cabinets, the 1st demo pair i saw had the vinyl coming off and it sort of tainted me. Always liked the sound though. A freind of mine has a pair of the Tannoy's that use 8" drivers in a prismatic box about 40 litres and sealed. Gloss black with glass tops, very classy and sound good approx 15 yrs old

Hi ach, your mates speakers sound like the 6 series Tannoy's which were very popular and very unsual to look at.

I may be wrong but I though the S series were veneer rather than vinyl but I do believe they had somme production problems early on.The front baffle of my C6 center channel actuall fell off one night complete with drive unit.I reglued it back into the cabinet and all has been fine since.

You may be right, i just remember seeing the S6 & S8 at Megamart Auburn and they looked pretty ragged after some use. They did get sold of cheap though <$1000 for the S6 if i remember.

I believe West Coast Hi Fi in Morley specialise in Tannoy and B&W. At least that's what a guy in the store told me yesterday.
