h45e Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Hi guys before you ask, I have been searching high and low for a retailer that has these 3 TV's side by side. These are the 3 TV's im looking at.. PS50A550S1F + 4 year warranty + delivery = $3,175.00 LG 50PG70FD + 4 year warranty + delivery = $3,432.00 TH-50PZ800A + 4 year warranty + delivery = $3,320.00 Which one of those are good (trying to "future proof" as well.)
Redav Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Is the PS a Sammy? You'll probably find most people will say the Pana and Sammy (if that's what it is). Pricing is quite similar so it should come down to what looks the best to your eye. Like you said, might find it hard finding a store with them next to each other. Forget about the 'future proof' idea, it's a miss conception (especially if you're talking about the resolution) and doesn't happen in the world of technology. Besides, if it works now then even though it's going to be outdated in 3 years time, it's not going to function any less (barring extreme circumstances).
Owen Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 No such thing as future proof, whatever you get will be outdated in a year or two. Here is a concept, buy a 50PX80 for around $1550 now and buy a 50” or preferably a 60” new technology Panasonic or Pioneer in a year’s time. The future joint venture Pioneer technology Panasonic manufactured panels are supposed to be significantly better then current models in almost every way and prices will be cheaper then today.

They sound like pretty high prices. Check out these sites before you buy: http://www.thebargainhunter.net.au/ http://hdtvprices.pbwiki.com/ I have the 42" PZ800A and it is an outstanding quality screen. There seems to be plenty of anecdotal commentray online about the poor quality of the LG screens and regular failures. Not sure about the Samsungs but an LCD is never going to look as good as a plasma esp for fast motion. IMO - go for the TH-50PZ800A but check out those sites for a better price.
fencer1 Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Another point of contention often over looked is after sales service for those warranties. No idea about Panasonic or LG but after dealing with Samsung on two separate items ($3000 faulty fridge and $100 cash back offer on a $900 comp monitor actually paid back) I made sure I paid a bit more and picked Pioneer for my Plasma. Still not sure what I'm saying? Call Samsung customer service then try Pioneer
diesel Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 +70% premium is a hell of a lot to pay for excellent customer service
kulfi Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Not sure about the Samsungs but an LCD is never going to look as good as a plasma esp for fast motion. The Samsung mentioned by the OP was a plasma.
Ozivillan Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I have the Samsung Series 6 PS50a650, cost including delivery was $2879 plus it has 2 years warranty straight out of the box, this Set is superb, even looks good when it is switched off
boyd_06 Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Can anyone comment on the picture quality of the Sammy PS50a650 vs the Pana PZ800a?
HTD Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 (edited) Can anyone comment on the picture quality of the Sammy PS50a650 vs the Pana PZ800a? Yep the Pana has the best standard definition picture I've seen, apart from a grundig elegance. Edited September 28, 2008 by HTD
Ozivillan Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Can anyone comment on the picture quality of the Sammy PS50a650 vs the Pana PZ800a? The samsung just pips the panny 850 for picture quality in this review http://plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatvrev...g-pn50a650.html

The reveiw seems to be for the TH-50PZ85U not the 850. correct me if im wrong. if the sammy just beats the pana 85u then i'm assuming that the 800/850 kills the sammy?

This Panasonic Plasma is the 11th generation, while the Samsung is a 6th or 7th generation plasma. Edited September 28, 2008 by Ozivillan
MickB...... Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 (edited) Be wary of anything with LG on it. I purchased an LG DVD recorder. It went back to LG three times for repairs. It has never worked properly. I've never been able to record a DVD. It plays DVD's only when it feels like it. Its now out of warranty and LG don't want to know about it. I'd go for the Panasonic. But the price you have been quoted is way to high. Even Harvey Norman have the 50PZ800 for under $3,000. Future Proof does not exist. What we know as High Definition, 1920 x 1080 pixels, will eventually be replaced by a higher pixel count standard. Edited September 28, 2008 by MickBrown1965
fencer1 Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 +70% premium is a hell of a lot to pay for excellent customer service well +70% less service might not seem much to you but never again, by choice, for me. You get what you pay for.
h45e Posted October 24, 2008 Author Posted October 24, 2008 Im leaning towards the sammy now, because I can get it for under $2.5k plus it comes with a 2 year out of the box warrenty plus it comes with a blu-ray player.
digitalhome Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Definatley Panasonic TH50PZ800 FTW. This set has much, much better quality picture over the Samsung when displaying SD source material. Shame there is still some much of this on FTA these days.
Stooge007 Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 where are people getting the PS50A650 for $2.5k??? or do you mean the PS50A550??? receipts please

Panasonic for sure, its hands down the best on Vision out of those 3
h45e Posted October 25, 2008 Author Posted October 25, 2008 Unfortunatly, looks like I only have $2.5k to spend max now.. ggrrrrr partner. So the sammy is leading atm.
Jesh Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Unfortunatly, looks like I only have $2.5k to spend max now.. ggrrrrr partner. So the sammy is leading atm. That shouldnt be a problem, 2.5k can get you the Panasonic 50PZ800a. But if you really like the 800a then maybe try for the 46 inch.. Its only a few inches less... You can get that for under 2.5k EASY. Hope that helps.
Jliang70 Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Hmmm. The reveiw seems to be for the TH-50PZ85U not the 850. correct me if im wrong. if the sammy just beats the pana 85u then i'm assuming that the 800/850 kills the sammy? No, 85u is the same TV as 850.
Jliang70 Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 (edited) Unfortunatly, looks like I only have $2.5k to spend max now.. ggrrrrr partner. So the sammy is leading atm. Samsung is pretty good choice, in fact in my opinion the plasma TVs from Samsung range have been better TVs than their panasonic competitors in the last two years starting with P91 range to the current range of 550-650. h45e Posted October 25, 2008 Author Posted October 25, 2008 Plus it looks my DVD player is stuffing up (laser gone bad). I could repair it but it would cost quite a bit where if I buy the sammy I could get a BR for "free". Plus since I already have a sammy 32 inch, my gf wont have to learn "another" remote, this is one of the hardest choices I have ever made. Even though my gf says I shouldnt be spending money on "toys".
