Could someone explain the reason for such a huge difference in price between 50 & 60 inch plasma's?

I have seen the Pio Kuro PDPLX508A for $4500 and the PDPLX508A for $8000 on these forums. RRP's of $5999 & $9999 respectively.

Why does the extra 10 inches cost so much? What aspect of the manufacturing process could cause such a huge difference?

Perhaps I should have phrased the question a little better.

It's not about the manufacturing process. It's about the volumes and positioning of the 60" TVs. They are positioned as luxury items for the lucky few who can afford them and those volumes are low, so the price won't drop that easily. If you can mass-produce an item and get the big numbers going, it becomes easier to play the low-margin/high-numbers game to keep the cash flowing.

It was the same with 42" plasmas/26" LCDs a few years ago, then the cycle was repeated with 42" Full HD TVs and now it's running on 60" Full HD TVs.

It may also have to do with the maths of how many screens they can make out of each piece of plasma glass?

ie 10x50" screens vs 5x60"

Also bear in mind that whilst 10" extra doesn't sound such a lot when comparing the diagonal measurement, it actually accounts for around 50% extra plasma panel in visible area for a 60" vs 50" panel.. That 50% extra area is the equivalent to the size of a 36" panel, give or take a little.
