ToddG Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) I bought this TV under a week ago and to say I am not happy with it is an understatement. The colours just seem off and everything has a warm look to it (even on cool 2 setting). There is a overly red/brown tinge though the colours. Foxtel looks the worst colour wise, HD looks great when the signal is bright, but HD signal involving something like a darkened room the colours just dont look right and the skin tones seem way off and people just look orangey and sunburned. It seems like the white balance is out and even the whites seems to have a slightly pink look to them. I have phoned Samsung and they have told me that it could be my plasma that is the problem and harvey norman are prepared to swap it over, but I have this sinking feeling that I have blown 2Gs on a plasma model that suffers a really bad colour processor and that changing it over may not actually solve the problem. Surely this problem would be far more publicised because I am not a videophile and I find the colours to be totally unacceptable. Anyone also had this problem as I am not sure whether I can or should swap it over for another model television or not ??? Edited September 24, 2008 by ToddG
ChRiDDa Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 just take it back to the store and explain that your not happy with the product & that you would like to upgrade to something better - they should be happy do that, but will be less willing if u want to downgrade
gogeek1503560852 Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Take it back and get a replacement. It's probably not a fault in the model as there are several happy owners around here that i have seen. If the second one doesn't live up to your expectations then i would look for a different model if i were you. I just got a PS50A650 the other day and i am over the moon with it's color reproduction ... but it probably has a different processor in it compared to the 4 series. good luck
kulfi Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 If everything seems overtly red and just can't be changed no matter what settings you tweak, it might be a problem in the colour filters. Try to get the TV replaced and if the replacement doesn't please you either, swap it for some other brand.
Jinx43 Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Good news is it may not be a Series 4 issue. I've had one for over a month, but picture quality is not something I'm complaining about (see my PS42A450P1D thread for my full experience if needed). You may have just landed a dud unit... Good luck anyway, in getting things sorted out.
Bildi Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Just look at a display model and see if it has the same problem.
ToddG Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 (edited) Just look at a display model and see if it has the same problem. I have organised an exchange (same model), but am now concerned as I was in Myer today looking at various displays and many were side by side and have a guess which one stood out like a sore thumb, it didnt look as dynamic and had brown/orange tinges to faces rather than pinkish the Samsung a450. It was next to a Samsung series 6 LCD which had a trillion better colour accuracy on the faces, I could understand if it was slightly better, but the colour accuracy was infinitely better. Even some of the cheaper ones looked far more accurate colour wise side by side with it (possibly it had the same problem as mine). If the next one is the same I am writing to Samsung to complain because if I had of know this to be the case I would have bought something else (my friend has a LG which looks far better, but after reading reviews I went for Samsung which was supposedly better). I am hoping that it is just a problem with my particular set as I am sure that not all of the positive reviews would have been from those that just have had crappy CRT and think any big screen is just awesome, I am not a videophile or anything I just want bight dynamic and accurate colours I dont see people in real life with browny orange tints to their faces so I dont expect to see it on tv whenever I turn it on. shano23 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 (edited) have you tried calibrating it to see if it makes any improvement? Standard settings are crap and never look natural Edited September 25, 2008 by shano23
Shonky* Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Don't take this the wrong way, but did you actually look at the TV in store and compare it against others before you bought it? But yeah, try and calibrate it. Make sure it's not in "shop mode" or anything like that. From what you're describing it's almost the opposite of the shop mode torch settings.

Well I tried to, but I was in Harvey Norman and they had that crappy channel 9 hd demo going through it. Not easy to be able to compare from that. I had seen my friend's LG going before and after looking online of people saying that Samsung was better and had more accurate colours and I took it for granted that it would at least look as good or probably better. I was told that the 450 was the same as the 550 minus the 1080p so I think well it is the current Samsung plasma so it would be good quality. Its just that skin tones are orange instead of pink and there is too much orange saturation through sd broadcasts meaning that anything indoor usually has a strong orange/brown tinge to it. I will take some photos over the weekend and post them on here. Edited September 26, 2008 by ToddG
