The DVD drive in my Hitachi DV-DS163A recently died.

Got a quote to have it fixed which was more than a new box, so started looking for other ideas.

Firstly I replaced the drive with another drive, but that one stopped working after burning one disc.

I then took the HDD out of the box and popped it into a PC, hoping that I could transfer the files - it couldn't recognise the formatting in either Windows or Linux.

Then I bought another box and swapped the HDD thinking that would give me access to the files. That didn't work either, it told me there were no files on the HDD.

Back in the old box it shows me the menu listing, but with blue screens instead of thumbnails and when you press play, it can't find it.

Anybody any suggestions on how I can get the files of the HDD?

Only thing I can suggest is to use a program called "DigeniusDisk" which enabled me to put my PVR HDD into my computer and recognise the files for tranfer and conversion. There is a guide on how to do this on PC Pro's website at http://users.bigpond.net.au/pcpro/

That looks very promising!

I'll have a go over the next few days and post the results here.

Turning into a bit of a monologue.....

Anyway, I have learned a few lessons yesterday and thought I'd share the experience.

1- LG and Hitachi are identical machines using the same software and file format.

2- Do NOT try putting a HDD from a broken machine into a working one! For reasons best known to the manufacturers', when you put a new HDD in a machine, it will automatically format it, wiping all existing files.

3- If you have a LG or Hitachi HDD with files you want to transfer to your PC, have a look here: LG to PC software . Not only does the software works brilliantly, there are many other helpful hints on that site.

Now, if someone has any suggestions how to 'unformat' a LG/Hitachi HDD, I would be most grateful!

What do you want to do with the HDD? If you want to use it in a PC, can't you just reformat it in the PC using Disk Management?

I want to save about 20 hours of footage on the HDD and transfer it to a PC.
